Hi,
I am Vigilante on Gul'dan. I am the current gulid master of Apollo.
I think the phrase "chinese farmer" merits discussion.
To me, in the context of WoW, a "chinese farmer" is NOT a farmer whose parents happen to be from China. There is a number of players who cannot communicate with most other players and who grinds for gold all day. These kind of players are the definition of "chinese farmers". We can simply attribute the "chinese" quantifier of "chinese farmer" as bad luck on our part. It could just as well been "phillipino farmer" as far as most people cared.
As a chinese, hearing the phrase "chinese farmer" is tolerable because there is very little accountability on our part regarding the behaviour of those few. A lot of people enjoy trashtalking. I personally don't, but I accommodate them because they are a visible minority. It does make me feel uncomfortable when I hear chinese people use the term freely outside the context of discussion amongst chinese. Only because he is chinese, I feel uncomfortable about feeling sorry for that speaker. On the other hand, you should ask yourself this question: when you hear a white person say "white trash", a black person say "nigger !@#$", you would probably not reduce the respect you have for the respective ethnic groups. You will instead simply feel sorry for the respective speakers regarding their low esteem, if you pay even that much attention.
On a side note, when people talk about "Ones", they say 'Ones is a chinese guild' instead of 'Ones is a chinese farmer guild'. Indeed, this is the kind of behaviour that you expect and do receive from other players.
Finally, I want to comment on the split. Quite a while before the split when I was still an officer, I anticipated a split or something of that nature. We had players who wanted two different kinds of environments within the same guild. Ones is a chinese-only guild; we are not. The current Apollo competes more directly with some of the other guilds as a place to socialize and have fun. (Just watch us slowly nibble away at Lethal Souls, for example.) Ones will concentrate a little more on raiding and let the common nationality be their binding point. Apollo's bind point will be less invariant -- hopefully mostly composed of variations on general fun. In short, Apollo and Ones are just two guilds with two different approaches. In hindsight, it was perfectly natural that we split because the players have totally different visions for their end game playing environment.
Regarding Apollo now, we do discourage pin yin in /g. Obviously pin yin is totally fine if everyone is chinese in a particular channel such as /p. We discourage pin yin only because it excludes our non-chinese members, and makes us a less competitive guild for other players. We welcome "Ones" to our organized events -- and feel free to ask our members for help. Afterall, we are all former guild mates, and some of us know each other in real life.
Peace
PS: In case you havn't noticed, Linas (yue xia du zhuo) speaks a lot; don't take his words at 100% face value. It will be good for your liver (or whatever).
