I Sears garage door opener doesn't have this problem. It never loose code. It works with rolling code - a great security feature. We experienced power outage a couple of times, but never get your problem.

It depends on if you are a handy man. To my knowledge, a lot of people did it themselves eventually. It may take you a day if you do it first time. The key point is the track and the connect on the door. If you are not so confident, a local general contractor can do for you at cost ~$100.

Garage door king. The person service kanata (613-8382016) replaced my door torsion spring. He did a good job.

If your door uses torsion spring I recommend finding a professional to do the job. You may need to adjust the torsion. The spring is under tension, you use two steel bars to twist the spring. If you lose control you may get hurt.
If your door uses extension spring, it is ok to DIY. But I will still use professional to do it. Many small adjustments are needed. If it is not done right, too much load will put on the door and garage door opener .This will wear them out faster. Comparing to few thousand dollar of the door and opener. Two hundred dollar is good price to pay.

I installed my garage door opener with a friend since my garage ceiling is very high so I needed some one to help me to hang the rail.
I replaced one side of torsion spring for my wooden(heavy) garage door myself and replaced a coil spring for my relative's metal(light) garage door.
All the tasks are doable but you have to do the homework before starting the real project.
You may ask your friends or get a professional to help you.
