Raw-milk activist ends hunger strike

这位农民终于放弃了绝食抗争。
TORONTO -- Farmer and raw-milk crusader Michael Schmidt gave up his nearly month-long hunger strike yesterday and was toasted by some of the country's top chefs as they promised to continue the fight to make Ontario the first province to legalize the sale of unpasteurized milk.
Mr. Schmidt, who lost about 20 per cent of his body weight and now weighs 199 pounds, was joined at the legislature by dozens of supporters -- and a cow named Amelie -- as he marked the end of his hunger strike with a big glass of raw milk, straight from Amelie's udder.
上个月,安省自然资源部突然搜查了这位农民的农场,指控他没有执照来运营牛奶加工厂。
Mr. Schmidt began his protest after his farm was raided by the Ministry of Natural Resources on Nov. 21 and he was charged with operating a milk-processing plant without a licence.
"I do believe that I have achieved after these four weeks enough to justify my return to food, my hope for a shift within government circles seems to work," he said.
He would not say what progress he thought had been made.
安省禁止出售生牛奶,但是farmer总能找到一些法律漏洞。比如,法律并没有禁止farmer喊自家出产的生牛奶,那么一些投资者就可以收购famer的牛的股份,然后就可以购得生牛奶了。
The sale of raw milk is illegal in Ontario, but Mr. Schmidt and about 300 "investors" are taking advantage of a loophole in the Milk Act that allows farmers to drink raw milk from their cattle. Investors can buy a share of one of Mr. Schmidt's cows, effectively making them part owners. Each one pays Mr. Schmidt $2 a litre for the milk.
Finance Minister Greg Sorbara has previously supported the idea of debating the sale of raw milk, and his wife, Kate, stood alongside Mr. Schmidt at the rally.
"I grew up drinking raw milk, all my friends and neighbours drank raw milk, I fed all my children raw milk, all six of them, they feed their children raw milk, and I've never actually known anybody who ever got sick from raw milk," she said.
A who's who of chefs, including Jamie Kennedy and Michael Stadtlander, turned out to support Mr. Schmidt and urge the province at least to research the issue.
Health Canada requires all milk for sale in the country to be pasteurized; Premier Dalton McGuinty has said there's "no reason why we would move away from that."
Agriculture Minister Leona Dombrowsky said the government will not budge on the issue. "The science is consistent and it's very clear that anyone who would consume raw milk does so with great risk."
The province and health officials alike warn that unpasteurized milk can contain the same deadly E. coli bacteria that led to the tainted-water tragedy that killed seven people and sickened thousands more in Walkerton six years ago.
Mr. Schmidt is scheduled to appear in court Jan. 16 in Walkerton.
