I have a very special consideration, which is how patient you are in sending used car for maintenance, and possible repair in 1 yr.
The more willing and patient you are to send your car to workshop, regardless or comparing quote, normal maintenance, and actual repair, the lower the price of used car you can consider.
I can share my formula with you, if you are interested in budgeting for used car repair in 1 year. I won't post it at the moment, because general public won't even know themselves by answering/agreeing with the comment above.
Back to what I recommend... I recommend to buy used hybrid car, or used diesel car like VW, and Merc Benz. Hybrid car is generally near to new car price. Used diesel VW car will depends on various consideration of used car.
Merc Benz diesel car is only E series year 2005 and above, while previous diesel model is more than 10 year (haven't research is it 14 yr or what).
The reasoning are:
1. High depreciation of new car in first 5 yr
2. Low depreciation of used car in next 5 year
3. Variable maintenance by matching your personal flavor
4. Spend new car money in higher class car with higher & better quality
5. Higher class car implies better safety
6. Higher class car implies lower maintenance in 5 years
7. Lower maintenance implies spending less time to sent car to workshop (after initial repair in 1st year)
