Michael Sneed, a Chicago Sun-Times columnist, incorrectly identified the Virginia Tech shooter suspect on April 16th, 2007 as a Chinese student who "entered USA at San Francisco on Aug. 7th, 2006" with an "F-1 visa issued in Shanghai, China". Her report, which was published before police had made any announcement, was mainly used by TV media, including FOX News (who identified the killer as a "possible Chinese National"), MSNBC and ABC News. Sneed\'s message soon proved to be nothing more than a rumor. According to the Virginia Tech campus police on April 17th morning, 2007, the shooter was positively identified as a US permanent resident who moved to the United States from South Korea in 1992.
By April 18th, protests from other Chinese Nationals and Chinese Americans were mounting. Michael Sneed and Chicago Sun-Times had so far not issued a response, although some existing Chicago Sun-Times web pages have since been updated to indicate the real killer, as well as the claim that Sneed had a source for her original assertions.

Police believe the same man may be responsible for threats on campus last week, Sneed reported.
