Hi Tim,

Just heard from people that it better to have add / paint a coating on deck in order to keep the deck in good condition. I went to HD couple times trying to find one suitable, but there were just too many types to choose and it was hard to decide ! The question is, what kind of paint or coating is the best for the deck maintainance ?

I use Behr Premium Weatherproofing Wood Finish NO 501. for the deck floor. It has little color in it, last longer than clear finish. Premium Solid Color Weatherproofing Deck, Fence & Siding Stain for sides and rails. The solid color should last very long. Deck floor because it direct under sun and rain needs to be redone very 3 years. It would be easier if you use the same thing every time.
If you deck is not big use a brush,I found the job qulity is the best. A roller works too,not good as brush but faster.

My deck is cedar and never be treated before. It is 6 years old now. Is it necessary to clean the deck (use something like "Behr cleaner and brighter") before I paint? Thank you.

I guess the wood already turn gray. If you choose a clear finish you do have to use the bleach(brighter)before paint it. If you choose a solid color stain I don't think you need to. The solid color will cover it up. cedar is beautiful wood. I think a clear or light toned finish will work the best. I will use the bleach return the wood too original color.
My deck is treated wood, I haven't worked with cedar before. It is only my guess.

thank you, guys. We bleached it first as you suggested and then used the clear coats. It is water proof now.
