School buses across Eastern Ontario stayed off the roads Wednesday, giving students their second snow day of the week as a major winter storm hammered the region with snow and ice pellets.
By 7:00 a.m., Environment Canada said, 22 centimetres of snow and ice had fallen, with another 10 to 12 centimetres expected by the time the heavy snow tapers off into the early evening.
"The 22 centimetres puts you firmly into second place on the all-time list and counting," said Geoff Coulson, a warning preparedness meteorologist with Environment Canada.

Step carefully. The freezing rain that left 15 Ottawa pedestrians with fractures -- and countless more with bruises -- yesterday could make a return as early as this evening.
A storm warning issued by Environment Canada says a significant period of freezing rain and ice pellets is likely tonight, especially along and near lakes Erie and Ontario and over parts of Eastern Ontario tomorrow. The exact form and extent of precipitation will depend on how the storm tracks.
