Thousands protest to show support for China

More than 6,000 pro-China demonstrators took to Parliament Hill Sunday afternoon to show support for the Chinese government.
The demonstrators sang patriotic songs and waved flags to show support for a united China.

This is in the wake of the Chinese government's crack down on Tibetan protests and the ensuing calls for a boycott of the Beijing Olympics this summer.

Protesters said they want the world to take the politics out of the Olympics and accuse the media of supporting Tibetans while completely distorting the real situation in China.

Many say it was in fact Tibetans who initiated the violence with political protests, carefully plotted.

"What better time to tarnish China's image than at a political time like this? (Tibetan protesters) know that China wants a successful and peaceful Olympics. But they don't want that. They just want the world to focus on their little problem that should be solved," said Junior We from the Hill.

While China's human rights record has been harshly criticized, Prime Minister Harper announced this week that Canada will not boycott the Olympics.

"Lots of changes are happening, but to judge China and whether it's a perfect country for human rights, you have to look at their perspective," said Adam Wang from the rally.

However, Senator Consiglio Di Nino, Chair of the Parliamentary Friends of Tibet, released a statement disagreeing with comments that Tibetans being at fault.

"China's claim that Tibet is an internal matter, disputed by various authoritative opinions, is no excuse for oppression, denial of freedoms and rights which are universal values without borders. It is no excuse for denying fair trials for a thousand or more Tibetans who may face summary execution," he said.

But demonstrators maintain that the Olympics should not be about politics.

"We want friendship, we want peace. That's the spirit of the Olympics. Don't see the other side only," said Sally Chen.

One person interviewed took the correct approach. He suggested that China's record must be put in perspective. There was no further comment but certainly the U.S. record on human rights - it killed far more people in Vietnam including its own soldiers-far exceeds China's record. Then there its record on torture.....

Finally, today was a good start. CTV today's news at 6:00 pm was unbaised. I hope in future CTV will continue this kind of unbiased report to Canadian people. Let Canadian people hear the voices from other side of Chinese community in Canadian or people in China, not just Dalai side.

henri xie
Consiglio Di Nino is nuts. Does he have any evidences of his so-called "oppression","oppression"? His words is full of lies, guesses.

A. Hartshorn
I hope these Olympics are completely boycotted. China's human rights stink! They can't even feed and house their own people! They are a third world country and the stupid Olympic Committee should never have considered them for the games. Long Live Tibet (and Taiwan), and pray for freedom in China.

Richard N
I was at the demo. It was an ugly display of racial hatred. People brought some tibetans to tears telling them to "go home" and some said "we wish you were dead." Disgusting.

olympicme
It's very interesting to notice some people put words like "third world country" in their comment, at same time west label China as next superpower who possiblely over take US in coming decades.

Murray Maccallum
If things are so marvelous in China, what are all these people doing here in Canada? I do not think of myself as recist, but they need to answer the question.

Yang Li
Nothing more to say, but "I support the Beijing 2008 Olympics".

Yang Li
No matter who cry, who cheer, who pretend, who lie.

One China!!

I support the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games!

Maggie
Go China Go
Go Beijing Olympic Go

Nothing can stop 1.3 billion chinese people.

Wen Chen
People here are to protest against the biased report made by western medias. Some TV stations including CTV used the pictures of Nepal policemen to represent Chinese policemen. Wester medias got so excited about Tibet issue, they don't even try to look at what really happened there, they just fabricated some news that they feel comfortable to present. They were not so excited during the genocide in Rwanda, where 1 million people died, why? They really care more about Tibetan than African? No! They just want to take this as an excuse to slander China. That's not fair!

sam
Support Beijing 2008 olympic games!
Tibet is, was and always in china!

Patilio
The answer is simple. Canada is a free country. Anyone has his/her rights to stay anywhere in Canada. So what? Go ahead, everyone, shows whatever you want in this country, it's freedom.

K Choi
To Murray Maccallum:
I was born here, but my parents were from Hong Kong. The reason why we immigrated here was due to the opportunity Canada could provide for our family. Immigration is not merely a nationalist issues; because Canada provides a better economic outlook (back in 1989 anyways), many people from lots of nationalities immigrated to Canada. Unless you are a Native American, I'm sure the promise of opportunity is what also drove you or your ancestors here.

Bobby Huang
More and more westerners are working, studying and living in China.
...
Seeing is believing.
To find out real China, go visit China and check with your own eyes.

One China, one family.
Support Beijing 2008 Olympics!

in4m
I'm not Chinese, but I have strongly noticed that there has been biased reporting from western media, on everything from the riots in Tibet, China's human rights issues, and with regard to the Olympic happenings. The excuse for this tends to be that, with Tibet for example, it is because China doesn't allow reporters into the region. While this is true, I don't think it is a justifiable reason to report a one-sided story as the complete truth. To the western media... if you don't know the story, then don't report about it to us as though you actually do! I commend those who went out to the hill today... we need to hear more from the other side!

Jony
You have no right to judge others unless you are perfect yourself... "Free Tibet?" sounds good huh? how about "Free Quebec?" do people actually know where is Tibet? are those so called pro-Tibetan from Tibet? I don't think so! If yes, where is their native cloth, accessories? they are so westernized and speak fluent English, should we say that Canada has stripped them off their culture? These 'Tibetan protester' have nothing to lose by demonstrating and spreading hate while the actual Tibetan (IN TIBET) get their face smeared by these "so-called Tibetan"! In order to understand better, one should be there and witness the issue!

Frank
To answer Murray Maccallum's question. "If things are so marvelous in China, what are all these people doing here in Canada? I do not think of myself as recist, but they need to answer the question"

My answer: Yes, there are many Chinese immigrants who live here, while many Chinese students study here. On the other hand, many Canadians work, study and live in China as well! Things in China maybe no that marvelous yet, but it will be!

Xiao
STOP MEDIA DISTORTION!

Stop!!!!!!!

Ray S
To these guys have never been to China or Tibet, anything you said is like a joke. I've stayed in Tibet over 10 years. Over 90% Tibetans in south part of Tibet are willing to stay in China. They hate anything about Free Tibet. If you don't believe it, just go there to check out.

in4m
to Murray,
Just because someone choses to leave a country, doesn't mean that they don't have the right to have an opinion regarding a huge matter concerning it. Even though they don't want to live there anymore, I think they have can still express what their more personal perspective is regarding that country. To be against the media distortion and national unity is not proclaiming that ones country of origin is perfect of a desirable place to live.

Nan X
it is good thing that China holds 2008 Olympics, but the communisty party uses this to persucate more people, that is not right.

steven lee
hey,A. Hartshorn

Ooooops, China as a third world country??!!! even my prof. from bank of canada would consider China as well-developed country according to the GDP and GNP currently. i just hope you could understand what GDP and GNP is.

T. Lu
In response to Murray,
People leave China for personal reasons. In fact, a lot of people who left China in the early years are actually thinking about returning to China for hope of better life. In fact if you look at the urban life in China, it is on par with many major cities in the west. I am Chinese and I left China for the hope of an education that I can use for the future. For my case, many degrees in China are not internationally recognized. Hence, I am in Canada because I want a degree that I can use in the future. This has very little to do with the standard of living, you can't just say these people are leaving for Canada because they think China is bad.

In response to A. Hartshorn
I'm sorry you feel that way. I'm not sure why you utter these words. China is a large country with a huge population. You can not comprehend the difficulties of trying to cloth and feed 1.3 billion people. Not to mention that it was only recently that China began rapid economic development. Sure there are problems, even in Canada (a developed nation) has problems. China's human right record is an issue that needs to be addressed, but it will be fixed with time. Remember, less than 100 years ago, China was a nation ruled by the emperor with no regards for human rights what so ever. To go from that position to now is a huge achievement, and it will only get better. Please be more optimistic and just enjoy the game. Donft take what the developed nation have today for granted. Slavery was abolished in the west not so long ago, and that took centuries. Let the Chinese people understand the value of human rights and the problem will fix itself.

Jim Baribault
Today, April 13/08 some friends and I attended the rally in support of China's right to peaceably hold the Olympic Games without disruption by violent protests. Tibet is part of China and that relationship is not as simply as the western media presents it. If the situation was the internal Canadian problem that occurred a few years ago and Chinese or other foreign media were to present a bias picture favouring violence as a solution to the wishes of the few in Quebec for separation you can just imagine the uproar in our often biased TV, radio and written media. Every one has the right to protest but violence is not acceptable. We take care of G8 violent protesters in the least violent way possible, we should allow the Chinese people the same right to peace, safety for their citizens and good order.

M.K
welcome unbaised news.

randy
CBC was my default news website but they did not even mention this event in their news webpage. Are they biased? I feel betrayed. I guess I need to open my eyes to other news channel like CTV. Thanks CTV for the reporting.

Feng
I will join Canada's First Nations people to boycott the 2010 Vancouver Olympic games.

Amoy
Finally the canadian media can give the right number of pro-China protest for first time. these people include who always criticize chinese government, who attend the Tiananmen square protest in 1989, who come from hongkong and taiwan, why they all come togather and make same voice? think about it pls!

Richard
The organizer of this demonstration provides free bus ride to people from Toronto. They also provide gas money reimburse to who drive there by car. Any foreign government support all these? I don't know. Today is the global day for darfur, but no one care about darfur. It's shame.

Annie Yu
It is important to know that China is one country, and there is far more Western countries that are reporting biased stuff. And so, there still are so many brainwashed westerners are thinking China is the only what so ever country in the world, how sad...

Wally
How many of the demonstrators are in Canada on scholarships underwritten by the Canadian Gov't and Canadian Universities. Why are we subsidizing industrial espionage and political
provacateurs.

Hank
Look, Tibet has been in that position for over 50 years. Why make trouble now? Why not years ago ? The Dalai Lama was living in exile then, too. Let the games go on and keep politics away.

Warren Peltier
I'm a Canadian, and I live in China. China is a wonderful country. I don't see oppression here. In fact, China goes out of its way to preserve the culture and heritage of its 55 ethnic minorities. You don't see them complaining.

Jake B
2008 Beijing Olympics, and the 1936 Berlin Olympics, too many similarities, not enough differences. Both of these games were held by oppressive totalitarian regimes intent on using the world stage for propaganda. Way to go IOC in promoting freedom and brotherhood.

Coco M.
WE ARE WILL TO STAND UP AND TO TELL ABOUT WHAT'S RIGHT AND THE TRUTH, BECAUSE WE ARE CHINESE!

R S
Gave credit to CTV for the unbiased report. China is not a perfect country in term of human right, but that is not the reason for bashing. Hosting Olympics itself is the first positive sign that China is rejoining international community. The human right issue should be looked at the country's perspective, and it has been changing.

One point I want to address is that Tibet issue is not a human right issue, it is rooted in race. Tibetans enjoy at least as same level of human right as ethical Han Chinese.

TP2008
I am Chinese Canadian myself but I think Canada should boycott Olympic summer game in Beijing. CCP is as evil as Nazi, my people is suffering in daily bases. China has been kidnapped by CCP for so long,so it is time for the rest of the world to take action now.

bigoleblue
if you love china so much.buy a one way ticket. The blood of the innocent still cry out from the tinamin square. canada no go and u no stay.Human rights before olympic glory

Zoe Zhu
China did a good job in feeding and housing 1.3 billion people. This is the biggest human rights issue. If you don't know the situation in China, please shut up.

Go Beijing Olympics!

nick wong
To Richard N
talking aboubt Racial Hatred, looking who is talking - Dont you realize why the West is so willing to criticize China, because they are afraid of its rising power. The West is afraid of losing control, it can not stand an Asian country to compete with them - that is Racism. China has 56 minorities, tibetans are just one of them. Chinese people are always proud of having all those minorities in one big family, a concept the West does not understand. Many Han Chinese feel betrayed by the Tibentan seperatists because they take avantage of the Anti-China sentiment and Western ignorance of China to stand against China. Dont forget, the Tibetans in China are Tibentan Chinese, just like the Xinjiang Chinese, Tu Chinese, Miao Chinese, Korean Chinese......

Becky Z
I am currently on my visiting to my hometown in China now. It's so exicting for me to see this news in CTV's website.

As a Chinese Canadian, I support 2008 Olympics. I support one China. No one and nothing can break apart a united China.

ping chang
As a chinese canadian, it is a real shame to see such an ugly show in ottawa. CCP regime is not chosen by chinese election. It holds the coutry like kidnapping. It always lies, from tiananmen massacre in 1989 to tibet his year. No body knows who and where will be the next. It is a shame of the whole world to have olympics there.

Zhigang Wang
No one can break the truth that Tibet was, is and will always be part of China. Beijing Olymplics will hold the most successfully Olympics in the histroy

kate
considering how many so called refugees we took in from China during the Tianamen square debacle I'm surprised that anyone would dare show up to support them. While Tibet may not have a clean history that is no excuse for the way China has treated them nor does it excuse the theft of their country, their culture, their spirit.

Eric
Senator Consiglio Di Nino said "It is no excuse for denying fair trials for a thousand or more Tibetans who may face summary execution."

I bet he got this nonsense from a recent cover story of Macleans. He still thinks China like 20 years ago. Wake up and go to China to take a look first.

Mike
henri -- you call Di Nino 'nuts' for saying that there is oppression in china. Have you been under a rock this month? Photos of chinese soldiers attacking monks have been all over the place. And if you believe that violence was justified, then you have to look no further than the fact the Chinese have censored the press, the internet, and denied to their own people that they stormed a peaceful protest at Tiananmen Square in 1989. There are countless examples. If you're ignoring the evidence that's in front of your face, maybe you're the one who is nuts.

Denis P
Let me get this straight. The invasion and assimilation of Tibet, by China, was an illusion???
Tibet, a nation of Buddhists, is the aggressor in this????? The Dali Lama wants to sit down and have civil negotiation with China, and he's labeled as a "devil"?????
To all you China/Olympic supporters.
Is there pollution where you live?
Have you no concept of how a tyrannical nation like China operates?
I for one will be boycotting the Olympics, and will try and convince everyone I know to do the same. It' the least the people of Canada can do to call this obvious human rights violation by China, to account.

Art Zhang
I was originally from China. It's so shamed to see this kind of demonstration. It is all about Nationalism. Is the whole world wrong and only China is correct??

Street-Office
Go China
Go Beijing

Tibet WAS, IS, and always WILL BE, a part of China!

Stop Media Distortion!

moonlady
support the Beijing 2008 Olympics!! NOBODY can stop it! Tibet was, is, will be part of China!! NOBODY can steal it!!!

Lucy G
GO BEIJING!!!!!I LOVE U CHINA!!

steven
hey, A. Hartshorn, even my prof. from bank of canada would consider China as developed country right now according to currently GDP and GNP. Ooops, i just hope you could understand what GDP and GNP is.

Mia
We Chinese are proud of who we are!we are kind people and we are peace lovers! we are strong, we stand firm! when we are oppressed, we fight back!

YEZ
To: Murray Maccallum
If China is that terrible, how come there are millions of forigners in China.

My question can answer yours.

Eric Z
to "not a racist" Murray Maccallum, things seem still very marvelous in Europe, why don't you go back there? Even as Canadians (some of them I'm pretty sure are just international students etc), don't they have rights to support China? Do they have to act against China once they leave the country so they can stay in Canada?

Judy Bell
When was the last time you saw the Chinese Canadians protest like this? Some Canadians have a biased view when it comes to China, I have visited China, its certainly not third world and the people there are very nice. The reason people are protesting is because of all the unfair reporting and hatred towards China and Chinese Canadians. I have seen some "freedom fighters" ask my Chinese friends questions such as

"why is your country so violent? why do you people kill Tibetans?"

its funny because he is a Chinese Canadian born here, and these people are holding him personally responsible for the Chinese government's action. No wonder the Chinese Canadians are fed up with the media bias, I would be too.

Hong Shu Fan
Maybe only hatred could lead you to such a biased conclusion about China. First, China has been able to feed 1.3 billion people with far less than average arable lands. It is such a remarkable achievement that United Nations have been introducing Chinafs experience to the African countries. Second, if you want to blame China for winning the bid for Olympics games in 2008, I guess the best thing you could do is to pray for a time machine that could take you back to 2001. Thirdly, I doubt if you ever been to Tibet, or Taiwan or other part of China. What you wrote here just reveal how narrow-minded, arrogant and ignorant you are about a great civilization in this planet. If you really care about the freedom in China, please read more books and cite more accurate figures, instead of using offensive language against China.

Win Te Pu
Most of the Chinese in China, and most of us Chinese Canadians are agree about the abject illogical reports of the Western media which amount to pure China-bashing. Chinese Canadians are usually quite silent, taking little condescension from the Western media types. But today shows how bad it has become for a massive rally like this to take place. Stop racist bashing of China and Chinese!

Joan
First, to my fellow Chinese. I'm so proud of you. Finally, we are strong enough to voice our views to the public.

Second, my answer to "Murray Maccallum"

Thanks for asking this question.

Did you know that more and more Chinese people go back to China and fewer and fewer Chinese want to go abroad to live in recent years?

I can not speak for others, in my case I like Canada because Canada has fewer people. But being in Canada doesn't make me any less Chinese. Of course, I love Canada as well.

If you have a chance, go to China to take a look. I'm sure you will have a different opinion than that which is portrayed in the media here.

cindy6
What's wrong with China while living in Canada? There are loads of Canadian expats in China as well. Are they being persecuted in Canada?
And the comments like 3rd world country is disgusting. I guess the Olympics is supposed to be the rich men's game? Or perhaps should I say white men's game?

Oakville
Murray Maccallum: you asked a good question, i left China in 1995, to look for better opportunities elsewhere

While for the past 13 years since i left, China made tremendous change, just unbelievable. i actually have lots of friends around me are moving back.

China's political reform are moving at slow pace, compare to the economical achievement, but it certainly is moving, if you compare government transparency, independent press with what it was 5 years ago, you simply can not deny the progress.

Jane
To: Murray Maccallum
Here is my answer to your question. 1. It is personal choice of life style.
2. Canadian Government sincerely invited us coming to support your ecomony as you do not have enough population here.
3. No matter how long we live in Canadian, we are still Chinese and will never change our love to China.

Jane Lu
Question for Murray Maccallum: Many pioneers of Canada came from France, England, Scotland, Italy, Germany and other countries in Europe, these are all marvellous countries at that time and now too. Do you know why these pioneers come to Canada? I am a new immigrant, and I am very interested in Canadafs history. Hope you can answer my question. Thanks.

Ran Z.
I don't get Dalai Lama. From yesterday's interview by NBC, at the end, he said he has been in semi-retired poisition and is looking forward to complete retirement, if he is not in a political leadership, then who is leading the violence for recent events? CIA? He kept saying young Tibetian wouldn't listen to him. Then why he is looking forward to communicating with Chinese government so urgently? How effective is his advise of non-violence, only being as spirit leader?

Yi
I strongly support the Beijing Olympic games. A. Hartshorn, there are also many people living on the street in this country, so clean up your own mess before accusing others. Murray Maccallum, they came to Canada for different purpose, studying, traveling, immigrants, I can't see any problem. No place in this world is perfect, there are many immigrants of Canada from other countries too.

Ted Ly
I still find hard to understand what those demonstrators want. Do they want us to believe that Chinese government treats Tibetans well? Or the international community should turn our eyes aside when Chinese government kills and jails the Tibetans as they will?

I am a Han Chinese and I felt very sorry for the Tibetans. The demonstrators might think Tibet should be in China regardless how many lives at cost. There are more who think otherwise.

Xiao
@Richard N: What the hell? I was just at the gathering and it was a display of unity, support, peace and protesting about misrepresentation from the media.

There was no hatred, it is people like you who are spreading lies.

If there was such a display, wouldn't CTV's article mentioned it already? Since the western media view China under a microscope, if there was such offense being committed, they would have jumped at it and lash out at the demonstrators.

Another person with ulterior motive fueling the political fire.

Hazel
A. Hartshorn
China's human rights stink! They can't even feed and house their own people!
------------------------

As immigrantions, we love Canada, and we work hard to pay taxes.

Also, we love China because we were grown up there.

I think Canada's human rights didn't be built up in one day, right? so please show your tolerance to the China.

Last,doesn't Vancouver have homeless?

Kathy Chan
China is a like a large ship, filled with people. Let's say, one person finds a hole in the ship, and starts yelling and screaming, what good will it do? The result will be a whole shipload of panicking people, which will eventually cause the ship to sink!
Meanwhile, if the person goes to the captain and the crew fixes the hole peacefully, wouldn't that increase the survival of the entire ship?
It's not like China is not trying to fix the hole - it's just impossible to make drastic changes with so many people! Little by little, there is improvement and what more can we ask for? At least they are trying and going in the right direction. Thatfs more than I can say for some other countriesc.
Human rights come with huge responsibilities and consequences. A responsible government that wants to give total freedom to their people must first make sure that their people have enough education/knowledge to make the right decisions for the country.

Kenneth Zhang
The world most youngest political prisoner is still in custudy in China (2month girl , daughter of Jia Hu).
Tibeter are unable to meet their religion Baalism for 50 years.
The violent in Tibet started because the whole temple has been surrounded for 10 days, the reason for lock down is because a Tibet flag was raised at the temple.
More then 100 journalists are in jail or punished because they write something wrong.
I do not understand why they do this at Ottawa , they should do this at Beijing.
