... As donors, people hope their donations can be utilized fully and immediately on disaster relief and recovery for those in desperate needs. I wonder if you can help clarifying a few questions:

1. Will Canadian Red Cross determine how to use the donated fund designated to China Earthquake, or will it likely pass most of the fund to Red Cross of China and/or other government agencies?

2. How long will it likely take for you to transfer the fund or act with it, within days, weeks or months?
3. Will the Canadian government provide match to the donations, similar to the case of South Asia Tsunami fund?

Donations to the Canadian Red Cross China Earthquake response will be used to support emergency relief efforts already underway in Sichuan province. Canadian Red Cross donations to this response will be transferred to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies who will then distribute these funds to the Red Cross Society of China directly.

Members of the Federation are currently on the ground in China conducting emergency needs assessments. These assessments give the Federation the best information for how much money will be required to respond to the needs of those affected. Donations to the Canadian Red Cross will then be transferred through the Federation to the Red Cross in China.

Canadians can rest assured that their donations will go directly to those affected by the recent earthquake in as timely a manner as possible.

We do not know yet whether the Canadian government will match donations made to the Canadian Red Cross China Earthquake fund. This is something you could follow-up with your MP.
......

Public Affairs Coordinator
International Operations

The best way is to ask your family members or friends to do it in China, and then, you give it to them late.

This is a good idea. But we need to trust the red-cross. If there is management fee, it is acceptable since every similar organization does
the same thing.

How to set up an employee giving campaign at your workplace?

Does anyone have ideas to share?

Thanks,

Rob

Think about this
1. Assume you donate 1000 RMB (~140CAD) through Canadian red cross
2. Assume the adiministration fee is 10% (actually, it's higher than 10%, somebody mentioned ~20%)
Then, there is 100 RMB short when your donation gets to China.

Right now, the main problem is short of medicine. How much medicine can be bought using this 100 RMB? The answer is a lot. At least, it's enough to save a life.

So I recommand we use more direct way to donate. The best way is let your relative donate in China. Donate to Chinese Embassy and Chinese Red Cross is another preferable way.

Please do not consider about tax return too much. The purpose of donation is to save lives and help those people in this earthquake. It is NOT to get more refund. If your purpose is to get more tax return, please donate to Canadian aboriginals.

Here is the confirmation:
On Monday we issued an invitation to donate to the Red Cross with notification that Petro-Canada will match employee donations made prior to May 30, 2008
It has come to our attention that some employees are forwarding this email, along with the Petro-Canada link for donations, to members of the general public.

Please refrain from forwarding this offer and donation link outside of Petro-Canada – this link and matching offer is ONLY for the following:

Petro-Canada employees (full-time, part-time, temporary),
Contractors (with a Petro-Canada employee number and who receive a pay cheque from Petro-Canada),&
Co-op students employed by Petro-Canada, and
Retirees of Petro-Canada

For legal reasons, the matching of donations must be kept to these categories of employment only.

totally agree!!

Go talk to the human resources of your company. Some companies can match the employee donations. Of course they may require employees to provide their donation receipts.

I suggest you to print some pictures and bring them with you. Think carefully how to wisely talk with them. Your sympathy to the deadly disaster is more important than your identity/nationality. They know your identity already when they see you.

For some other people, I also want to comment on the overhead from the Red Cross. I can understand some people want their money fully delivered to the people in Sichuan. But it's not fair to ask the people in Red Cross to work for FREE. They have to deal with all kinds of people and manage millions of dollars. It is reasonable and understandable for them to deduct from our donations to cover their cost. As an internationally known non-profit organization, they have their own policy for all donations, not just for the China Earthquake. I think we can trust them. By the way, are you sure all your money donated to agencies in China will be used by the needed people?
Does anyone have ideas to share?

Thanks,

Rob
