Let me give you a good news. There is already someone in Toronto asked Service Ontario (Health Canada) about this. They have a new policy. If your employer is able to provide you a statement saying "they have the passion (no contract needed) to hire you until your WP expires". Then you get your free OHIP.
Maybe I am not correct. I saw the above statement from Yorkbbs. So you'd better to check it out with Health Canada. Tell them what I said. Ask them how to get it.
