Haha, you are ready to be hooked, it's not too late if you give up at this stage. Down the road, you will have tears and laughs, you will dance and bump your head against the walls.
Repotting is simply potting up, means untangling the circular roots, and pot up into a two inches bigger (diameter) pot, never much bigger, using fresh soil. However root pruning is another great way to renew an old plant, simply cut off 1/3 root from bottom and around the side, you have to do this while the plant is about to break its dormancy, normally in the early spring. Repotting can be done almost anytime even when the plant is actively growing. Growing indoors means that eventually you will need to do the root prunding, because you can't just potting up anymore. I have been doing lots of root pruning last spring, I am running out of room. My pomegranate trees have been root pruned many many times, they stay the same size each year.
I am totally self educated, like you, 6 years ago, the only plant I am able to care is Xmas cactus.
