Transpo Vote Scheduled for Thursday

Steve Winogron
Sunday, January 4, 2009
As CFRA News was first to report, the vote by striking OC Transpo mechanics, drivers and dispatchers will take place this Thursday at the Ottawa Civic Centre.
The union was ordered by the Minister of Labour, Rona Ambrose, to hold the vote no later than Friday of this week. Union lawyers had objected and said there was no compelling reason for the vote to be held, but the union agreed to hold it as ordered.
Because there must be a single voters' list, all 2300 members of the union local who wish to do so will have to cast their ballots at the Ottawa Civic Centre location. But the extended hours -- 6am to 8pm -- are meant to accommodate as many as possible.
The city and union must agree to names on the eligible voters list, but that is not expected to be a significant hurdle.
Transpo will try to re-publish its last offer to as many workers as possible by providing copies for distribution at the union meeting scheduled for Monday morning, and by posting details to its website. At that union meeting, the leadership is expected to urge members to vote against the city's last offer, primarily because of the most contentious issue of work scheduling.
If there are no complications or problems, the vote result could be known as soon as Thursday night. Even if the offer is accepted, though, we are being warned it could take up to an additional week to get the bus fleet ready to safely resume runs throughout Ottawa.
