A star football player flunked his math course. The coach was very upset and went to the professor to beg him to give the boy another chance. Finally the professor agreed to a special exam.
When it was over and the professor had corrected the test, the coach asked, “Well, how did he do?”
“He flunked again. It looks hopeless.” The professor showed the coach the paper. “Look at this –6x7 = 45.
“Oh, gee whiz, prof,” said the coach. “Give him a break. He only missed it by one.”
(i.e., the coach thinks 6x7 = 44 and so is not any smarter than the player)
