canadaeast.com - BlackBerry maker Research In Motion leads charge in wave of tech sector hires - Breaking News, New Brunswick, Canada

WATERLOO, Ont. - BlackBerry maker Research in Motion (TSX:RIM) is ushering in thousands of new employees this year, hoping to gain an edge over its competitors by hiring tech gurus laid off by others in slower parts of the technology sector. ENLARGE PHOTO THE CANADIAN PRESS/Nathan Denette Research In Motion co-CEOs Jim Balsillie (left) and Mike Lazaridis talk to media after an Ontario Securities Commission hearing in Toronto last month. The Waterloo, Ont.-based company has emerged as one of the rare Canadian companies actually growing operations during the economic downturn, with plans to add about 3,000 new workers in 2009 and increase its workforce to about 15,000. Founder and co-CEO Mike Lazaridis said his company isn't battening down the hatches as it weathers the recession, but rather looking for ways to grow the company. 'This is the easiest time to say 'I have to be very careful and wind down my investments,"' he said in a recent interview with The Canadian Press. But "this is the exact time to invest - if you can - because not only is there opportunity, but there are lots of resources out there."

nt #2

actually, i am seeing RIM going to repeat some old foot prints of someone.

but good sticker for me, only if i can figure out the exit point

sorry guys, maybe i am jumping btw lines too much

what i am saying is that you could make lots of money from RIM's stock provided you know at what price to enter and what price to exit.

RIM has some lead in competition but their competitive edge is fleeting because everyone looking at that piece as a cash cow

so by saying hiring at a mass this time is more or less trying to be preemptive than having a true intention. It is like building excess capacity to ward off other guys.

but I doubt how much this could scare others away. Believe me, talking is cheap and we all know of it. It is margin I will look at closely....

by the way, no offense to anyone, have we really see any true business leader in canada. On the other hand, i have seen tons of greedy guys hovering around...

keep you eyes open and keep you wallet tight, my 2 cents

I think you are absolutely right. I'm puzzled however at the timing of their announcement.

At this time, almost everyone is going to be skeptical of the validity of their statement.

If their intention is to claim the title of hi-tech leader in the country and gain some capital by stock value, now is probably one of the worst time to do so because investors are holding on to their money tight.
It's possible that they are taking advantage of the mass lay-offs, but that doesn't exactly provide any "new" jobs.

I'm no expert, I may be completely wrong about this, but RIM has always been a company that puts a huge smoke bomb on their hiring scheme and doesn't follow up well.
