Germany consulting with U.S. on GM, Opel

WASHINGTON — A team of German officials is consulting with the Obama administration in Washington about U.S. plans to restructure General Motors Corp. (NYSE:GM)
The visit comes amid reports the Italian automaker Fiat SpA is in talks to buy GM's European operations, which includes Germany's Opel.
German deputy finance minister Joerg Asmussen said at a news conference Friday that the team wants to glean U.S. government plans for GM, as the ailing auto giant tries to right itself.
GM is surviving on $13.4 billion in federal loans amid a sharp slowdown in demand for its cars.
Members of the U.S. government's automobile task force have set up shop at GM's Detroit headquarters, working alongside executives to guide the drastic changes they believe are needed.
