Both.

For some of these Tulip pictures, I set the exposure compensation around -1 depending on light conditions and where to meter. Adjusted few pictures when converting RAW to JPG if needed. But the best way is to monitor the histogram view for digital. Shooting film is very helpful for understanding exposure because you need to think more before press the shutter release button.
