Here is an Email sent from my previous laid-off colleague(local canadian). He is volunteering to setup kid shelter in India/Nepol.
How many of us are willing to do the similar thing in China?
From this, we may think of what is value differences between intellectual from China and others.
================================================================
The organization that I will be volunteering for is called Child Haven. It is an elderly couple who runs the entire organization out of their Maxville farm house! They operate 6 homes (with schooling) for destitute children - 4 in India, 1 in Tibet, 1 in Bangladesh and 1 in Nepal. There are about 120 kids in each home except Bangladesh which just opened up last fall. These homes operate on next to no money so things are pretty slim and the kids live there with the bare necessities (better than on the road where they would probably not live very long).
As for volunteering at these homes - only Nepal and Bangladesh are options right now. For political reasons, India's homes are off limits to volunteers and Tibet does not take any. So Nepal it is for me (just outside of Katmandu)! A minimum 3 month stay as a volunteer is also required.
As a volunteer we are responsible for all travel arrangements and expenses. What we get in return for our help (not to mention the experience!) is a room to be shared with one other volunteer with 2 beds (made out of cement I think!) and 2 meals a day which consist of rice and lentil soup. Everyday. No joke. As for showers and toilets - well... it's the third world.
As a volunteer at Child Haven we will be educating, assisting and coaching the children with their school work for several hours a day (almost taking on the role of a teacher) and will play and interact with them during the rest of the day. We get one day off a week for ourselves. The children are accepted into the home from ages 0-6 and will stay with the homes up till 16 years of age at which time they are ready to make a life for their own....
