T&T get a fine for opening store yesterday morning

好多餐馆、商店都是照常开门啊,city有没有去罚款?
个人感觉,city可能早盯上T&T了,就是看看它到时候是不是提前开门,好警示T&T, 生意再好,也要注意当地的法律,听city管辖。
“City bylaw officers visited the store at 11:30 a.m.”, 怎么这么巧啊,11点10分仪式还没结束呢,人就11点半到了,呵呵

餐馆可能不受这个限制,基本所有餐馆节假日都照常营业的。

Retail Store Closures on Remembrance Day

Earlier this year, City Council enacted a new Remembrance Day By-law 2008-355, which is in effect and will apply on November 11th this year.
In recognition of the significance of Remembrance Day in honoring Canadian Veterans and those serving in the military currently, and in accordance with the new by-law, certain classes of retail business establishments are required to close until 12:30 p.m. on November 11 each year. The exceptions to the closure requirement are:
  • Food/grocery, tobacco, antique and handicraft stores less than 2400 square feet in total area used for serving/selling to the public
  • Pharmacies less than 7500 square feet in total area used for serving/selling to the public
  • Book/newspaper dealers which store is less than 2400 square feet in total area used for serving/selling to the public
  • Convenience stores
  • Nurseries and flower/gardening supply stores
  • Gasoline/fuel stations
  • Businesses selling propane, diesel, natural gas and associated fuel products
  • Businesses dealing in rental/repair of motor vehicles and boats
Note that retail businesses, which are required to close under the new by-law and are normally open 24 hours, are required to be closed from 8 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. on November 11th.
The by-law does not apply to hotels and restaurants.

St. John the Baptist Day 也是不可以营业的。

只能说明T&T/Loblaws真傻,他们内部管理有漏洞。

法律规定是工作8小时可以有2次,每次15分钟休息。

This is one of the many stupid by-laws that this city has. The problem with North America in general is that lots of by-laws infringe on individual liberties, e.g. by-laws prohibiting drying clothes in the yard, all houses have to be painted in the same colour, etc. T&T is obviously targeted, as it is an Asian store. Minorities are always scrutinized more stringently than Whites in the West, and this is a fact. This kind of stuff is going to happen more often now and I hope that it will not turn Ottawa into another Vancouver, where Asian businesses are targeted and blamed for absolutely anything and everything.

Re Remembrance Day, Ontario and Québec are the only provinces in Canada where it is not a statutory holiday (No, it is not just a holiday for government workers as some people think.. it is only in these two provinces). It is also funny that Canadians think that Remembrance Day is such a big deal. In Britain, where Remembrance Day comes from, November 11 is no longer a holiday. They have Remembrance Sunday instead, when the war dead is commemorated on the Sunday closest to November 11.

Mark my words, the next thing they will target T&T is the lack of English signs, English labels on food items or even the poor English standard of staff. Some bigots may even make up stories like some members of the staff ignore questions in English or tell non-Asians that "they are not welcome". I have seen it happen constantly in Vancouver. If I were T&T, I would put up French signs quickly and hire French-speaking staff as that may also become an issue in this "bilingual" city.

When a low or a by-law is enforced, you can only say, "Sorry. Yes, Sir! Never again!", even though you could turn around and say, "Fxxx you, AH!"

T&T can challenge the by-law in court as unconstitutional.

Yes, one could challenge any law in court as unconstitutional if he/she has the money and time. But winning or losing is another story.
