I already mentioned the money for a student is ordinary from two parts. Research assistant (or teaching assistant) is a job and you have EI as mentioned in your T4 form. The other part is scholarship, which no EI was reduced (T4A or T4E?). The scholarship part is qualified for tax reduction.
But everyone need file a tax return, otherwise how can you get your money back as your tax is already in CRA?

I came to Canada as a student. With the little money I made as a research assistant, I still had to fill in my tax form. Mind you, I did not get OHIP or any other benifits.
