Firing may have spurred slaying-suicide
Mountain View victim lured out by pizza delivery

He was a molecular biologist who had run a prestigious genome center in China. She was a successful geneticist, the co-inventor of a patented technique to screen genes in a search for cures to AIDS and cancer.

Police are baffled as to why Guyang Matthew Huang killed Tanya Holzmayer on Wednesday night during a bizarre ambush timed to the delivery of a pizza to her home in a quiet Mountain View neighborhood. He later took his own life.

One possible clue, however, came from a close associate of the slain woman. Igor Roninson, Holzmayer's friend of more than 30 years who heads the Division of Molecular Oncology at the University of Illinois at Chicago, said Holzmayer fired Huang in June from a Menlo Park research company where they were working together.

The slaying -- witnessed by Holzmayer's teenage son -- stunned residents of the cherry blossom- and camellia-lined street in a city that saw just one homicide last year and two the year before.

"I just want to know why someone would want to do something like that in such a nice community," said Evan Brogan, 16, a neighbor who dialed 911 after the shooting. "I keep asking myself if I could have done more, but I know I couldn't have."

Mountain View police spokesman Jim Bennett said Holzmayer, 46, had supervised Huang, 38, for some months at PPD Discovery, a drug research firm in Menlo Park.

Huang, a Foster City resident, worked for PPD for about a year, serving as director of molecular biology and bioinformatics, said Nancy Zeleniak, spokeswoman for PPD, the parent company headquartered in Wilmington, N.C.

HOLZMAYER HAD LEFT FIRM
Holzmayer was vice president of genomic research and worked for PPD for more than four years. She left the company in December, Zeleniak said. She would not comment on whether the two had left voluntarily.

But Holzmayer's friend, Roninson, said Huang was fired over a matter of internal "company rules" that he would not describe except to dismiss as minor.

"The firing of Matthew Huang was one of your routine situations that happen all the time and are not worth a footnote," he said.

Roninson said Holzmayer left PPD by mutual agreement to pursue her own ideas, maybe start a new company.

EMPLOYEES WON'T TALK
The 60-odd employees of PPD Discovery had been instructed not to talk to the media, and more than a dozen who were approached as they left work yesterday declined to comment on any relationship between assailant and victim.

Neither Holzmayer nor Huang was known to police in their cities of work or residence, and it wasn't clear yesterday whether any restraining orders had been issued.

Police say that around 8:45 p.m. Wednesday, a Domino's Pizza delivery person knocked on the door of Holzmayer's two-story Windmill Park Lane home. Holzmayer opened the door, apparently to say that she had not ordered any food,

police said.

Huang -- who police think placed the order to lure Holzmayer outside -- suddenly appeared, shoved the deliveryman aside and shot his former boss repeatedly. A witness said Huang "peeled out" in his car and fled.

"It does appear at this point that it was some kind of a ploy or ruse to get the victim outside," Bennett said. "It was a complete surprise to the pizza delivery person."

DELIVERYMAN UNHURT
The Domino's employee was uninjured and declined to comment.

Holzmayer, who was divorced, had a teenage son who was home at the time and witnessed part of the shooting, police said. Holzmayer's friend Roninson said the young man is coping with the tragedy, as is Holzmayer's mother, with whom Roninson spoke.

"Her grandson keeps consoling her," Roninson said. "Can you imagine? This happened in front of his eyes, and he's consoling his grandmother."

Less than two hours after the shooting, Huang was found dead on a Foster City levee about a quarter-mile from the home where he lived with his family. Police found a .38-caliber pistol near the body.

Police said Huang -- who apparently had been depressed in recent weeks -- had parked his car near his home, called his wife and then walked away.

"He told her he was on the bay, told her he had shot his boss and he . . . threatened suicide," Foster City Police Capt. Craig Courtin said.

A woman who answered the door of Huang's home on Albacore Lane yesterday declined to comment, as did a man who answered the phone.

Meanwhile, Holzmayer's neighbors were trying to come to terms with the crime.

David Brogan, Evan's father, said his wife, Micheline, a nurse at El Camino Hospital in Mountain View, rushed to the home after the deliveryman told her someone had been shot.

"The victim was lying in a pool of blood. My wife checked her carotid artery for a pulse, and there was none," Brogan said. "She basically died instantly."

Remarkably, Brogan said, another Domino's Pizza delivery person arrived at the crime scene and scooped up the pizzas because customers were wondering where their food was. "Life goes on," he said.

But it goes on without Holzmayer, a woman who went from being a Russian refugee in 1989 to a prominent genetic researcher in the heart of the Silicon Valley.

Holzmayer, Roninson said, loved playing classical piano music and appreciated beauty in science. She would ripple with excitement and joy when the research was going well, he said.

"Every life lost is a big loss. But here was someone who was actually making a difference," he said. "I'm absolutely convinced, from knowing Tanya and having met Matthew, that it was absolute insanity."

Huang Guyang
Gene & Development
Nature

Subject: commenting Your attack on Chen Zhu

Mr. Fang Zhouzi,

Your attack on Dr. Chen Zhu on Nov. 16 about his track record has at
least one mistake. You claimed that Dr. Chen Zhu never had publication
on “world first-class journals”. As far as I know, Dr. Chen had a paper
on journal Blood on leukemia that was its cover story. He also had a
couple PNAS paper and at least one on Genome Research. If those were
not “world first-class journals”, please enlighten me what should be.

And I’d also like to ask you to publish this letter on your xys2
website. Thanks.

For the record, I have collaborated with Zhu for years and even had
publications together. I even served as his xxxxutive deputy director
of the Chinese National Human Genome Center at Shanghai in 1999.

Yours truly,

G. Matthew Huang, Ph.D.
