Also, by the end of each year, Consumers Reports (NEVER Consumers Digest!!!) will publish a book titled "Car Buying Guide", the book is very informative. Maybe you friend has one, if not visit Ottawa Main Library.
And each year April Edition of Consumers Reports is on CARS, very comprehensive. (You can go to any bookstores, e.g. Chapters and read it).
In the end, it is you and your family use (AND) drive that CAR.
Below is my own personal criteria to choose a car:
1. RELIABLE - do you want you car breaks down in COLD windy winter,
especially on highway?
(how long does CAR battery last?
The most dangerous is TRANSMISSION failure!)
2. Cost of maintenance - (and hence INCONVENIENCE)
the more problem (although minor) the car is, the more
money you have to spend to fixing your car (and
inconvenience)
3. Engine oil leakage? (Usually Transmission oil)
4. Safety - The safest cars are American cars (more steel, longer =>
distance from front bumper to driver and the trunk at the
back) + BENZ and VOLVO
It seems that most accidents are caused by drivers with
bad driving attitude, e.g. tailgating (that is illegal) speeding
5. BUDGET
My mechanic told me, any new cars shouldn't have problem in the first three years, what if after three years, ha ha...
If you have kids, it seems that reliability is the most important. (in COLD winter).
