if your house gets a lot of 冰锥子 while you don't see them on your neighbor's houses, you might have insulation problem in your attic.

今天回来后发现门框上没有水迹,应该是没有再漏。谢谢楼上的建议,等天气好一点后,肯定要查明原因,尽快修复。

1. Gutters for roof is also used to drain water when raining. Without gutters, during heavy rain, rain will drain from roof directly, which mean a small water fall....

2. Water has to be drained away from the house for about 3ft (if I remember correctly - correct me if I am wrong about the actual distance), this is according to building codes. If it's not done (for the sake of argument, we will skip weather it will harm your foundation or not), you will have difficulty to claim insurance during water damage to foundation

3. Your house's elevation should be above grid, which means when water drained from gutters will follow grid and go down instead of backing to your foundation. .
1. Yes, it is the only reason to install downspout, however compared to the damage to roof in the winter, the gutter is a crap.

2. The eave projection away from wall nomally is 2 feet, as what you said, all the house design shall not be in accordance to Onatrio Building Code.

In terms of insurance, I've never been asked to install downspout to my roof by insurance company, I don't know other cases.

Don't worry about the capacity of the foundation, the effect to the footings from water is already taken into account, the means has been taken to drain the water around the foundation.

3. It is none of business of the gutters.

Under any circumstance, there should not be any leak from roof to your room weather it's because gutters are clogged or anything else.

If it's because of gutters clogged, you need to find out why the gutter got clogged. If not, you will have leak in the future again.

Suggestion, go into your attic and traced the leak location. Clean the snow off your roof on a nice days and check the leak location. Repair if necessary. If you can't repair, get a contractor to do it. Take picture if it's for warranty purpose.

Ice damming is a very common problem about roof in the winter, it happens almost anywhere in Canada, just search it online, you will get a rough idea.

I am just saying if there is a leak, you have to find the reason for leak and fix it. If it's from ICE damming, you have to fix the insulation in attic.

Would you consider a leak is normal and it should be happening to your house? Personally, I have owned 2 houses in the past, I have not have any leaks from roof and I don't like any leak to my room.

Leak is not normal, however most leak caused by ice damming, better insulation will reduce the problem but can't solve the problem.

1. Interesting theory, I assume by saying "downspout", you meant gutters. There's difference between them. Based on what you have said that "you have never been asked by insurance company" and "gutters are crap', I assume you don't have gutters on your roof. Would you mind show us some pictures. You are the 1st person I have spoked to claims to not have gutters on roof and the 1st person to claim we shall not follow the building code. I would love to see the design of your house.

Building Code does not require to install gutters to the roofs, that is why the default configuration of a new house is without gutters. I don't think the insurance company will require the extra stuff beyond the requirements of building code.

In the winter, the downspout and gutters are full of ice, it cant drain anymore, the ice filled in them caused extra load to the eave, especially when the temperature change sharply, the ice accumulated on the gutter could be more than half feet even more, it will damage the roof.

photo from Internet, Do you see how weak the gutter is?
You will understand how the gutter damage your eave in the picture.

I also have another photo, it is too large to post here, it will show how "useful" the gutter is in the winter.

Anybody can help me to reduce the size of the photo?
