From what I have read on come from China, a lot of people here favour the Conservatives over the Liberals, NDP or even Green Party, which is very suprising for a variety of reasons.
First, is the immigration issue:
Besides the general issue of the coservatives' main support base being anti-immigrant western Canada, there are the actions of the conservatives and the results:
-wait times for sponsoring parents and grandparents has soared from 2 years to 8 years in the 7 years the conservatives have been in power, even teh sponsorship application portion now takes nearly 42 months (I know this from my own experience trying to sponsor my parents)
-extensive cut backs to integration support for new immigrant despite the current record numebrs of immigrants (http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news...s-threaten-immigrant-agencies/article1848219/)
-while the landing fee was reduced, and that seems nice (I got a refund from it), it reduced funding to the ministry of immigration and there were no replacement funds made available, which is also likely a reason the wait times are going up
-the conservatives promised to improve the recognition of foreign degrees and dimplomas last election, but have done none of what they said, they were jsut trying to buy our votes, and now, they said, knowing an election was coming, they would increase family immigration when the original plan was to cut it by 5%, which is what will probably happen if the conservatives stay in power so they can keep the rednecks in Alberta happy.
Economy
There's no doubt the economy suffered under the conservatives' time in power, it's not all their fault as the whoel world has economic problems, but that is largely due to coservative governments elsewhere and their poor economic ploicy (such as George Buch Jr.'s Republicans and the Tea Party in the US).
The conservatives cut taxes for the rich, by huge amounts, the middle and lower class saw some reductions (nice to pay lass tax, sure, but it wasn't more than a few hundred dollars), so now, the governemnt has less money to pay for all the things it does, namely, education, healthcare, roads and allt the services. But these things aren't costing less, so they either have to be cut back (healthcare, education, research, cultural programs) and they had to borrow money to pay for the rest. The cut-backs to education, healthcare and research have long-term impact on Canada's wealth, education gives the country higher paying jobs, healthcare gives companies a cost advantage over other countries, research produces technology and products that found new companies. The otehr programs still have to be paid for, which means the governemtn has to borrow the money, msotly from us, and from foreign countries, which costs interest, and devalues our currency, which leads to things costing more without an increase in salaries, so you effectively make less baecause of this, more than the small tax break you got. The Canadian dollar may seem strong next to the US dollar, but that's only because there's an even worse case of tax cuts for the rich in the US which is causing the dollar to go way down.
-the conservatives talk about supporting 'hard working' Canadians, despite the fact they aren't doing anything for them, they really mean to oil workers in Alberta, not Chinese people working in high tech, or anybody working in Ontario for that matter.
-the conservatives have given tax breaks to oil companies to dig up the oil sands that create temprary jobs until it's gone (make no mistake, it will be gone), while those same oil companies charge more for your gas and blame it on high taxes, this is very short-term thinking that will lead Canada to failure, natural resources end, when they do, the economy is destroyed, just ask someone from Newfoundland what happened when the fish and trees ran out. Those tax breaks could instead go into high-tech or medical research, which would generate profitable companies that employ skilled workers and unskilled workers.
-The reductions in education funding have made university more inaccesible than ever, leaving more unskilled people than ever, when combined with not working on recognizing foreign degrees, this leaves a huge group of people that can only work in places like Alberta, and they will be without work when it runs out.
-Canada's Economic Action plan projects were all short term projects that will not have a lasting effect on the country, all the construction workers who did benefit, will soon be on welfare costing us, the taxpayer, even more money. Not one bit of this money went to improving schools, universities or to help start new high tech, medical or other information based companies that would have helped Canada in the long term
Accountability/Ethics
The coservatives only came to power because the old Liberal party messed up with the sponsorship scandal back inteh mid-1990's, with the conservatives promising a transparent governement that was held accountable.
-the conservatives have been in terms of transparency, blocking out members of press if they ask the wrong questions, and even trying to change the law so that a news station can lie to the public, an exact copy of what Gearge Bush Jr. did in the US
-several high ranking people in the coservative party are now charged and some convicted for election fraud from the 2008 election
-the coservatives have been spending our tax dollars on their own political ads
-Jason Kenney, the ministor of immigration, was involved on an influence peddling scandal (using his position in the government to get money for his ads), but instead of resigning or even apologozing, he blamed it on one of his employees and had them fired. This was the case of Jason Kenney sending out letters asking for money using the government of Canada letterhead, indicating that anyone who gave him money could influence the governement, which is illegal.
- large numbers of 'Canada's Action plan' cheques where marked with the conservative party logo, instead of the government of Canada, who was really paying for the stimulis projects
Environment
The conservatives reduced enviromental impact assesments, so that oil sands projects in Alberta could start faster, guess who gets all the pollution from the oil sands - Ontario
I could go on, much much longer, but you need to make your own informed opinion of who to vote for. The Liberals, NDP and the Green Party all have good reasons to vote for them. And remember you're not just voting for a party, but for a person who represents you, don't you think that should be someone who has the same background as you, or at least an education like, or at least educated (unlike the current conservative minister of science who doesn't believe in evolution http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/national/article320476.ece that best sums up the coservatives).
