艺术家艾未未被警方控制


艾未未的上海工作室于今年1月遭强拆
北京时间4月3日上午，中国著名艺术家艾未未与其助手，准备前往从首都机场搭乘班机前往香港参加活动，在首都机场边检处被工作人员拦下，其后艾未未被警察带走，目前手机关机外界无法与其联络。

据艾未未工作室的一位当时不在现场，目前赶至工作室附近的工作人员在网上发布消息，下午三时半，艾未未的工作室外五十米处，拉起了三道警戒线，禁止行人和车辆靠近工作室。已经有前往工作室围观网友进行拍摄，当有人问警戒线处的警察，什么时候会解除警戒，警察答时间不会太短。


英国《卫报》的一位记者沃茨（Jonathan Watts）骑自行车前往艾未未工作室附近采访拍照，被便衣警察截停，手机被抢走，所拍照片被警察从手机上强行删除。当时他看见艾未未工作室外有15到20名警察驻守。


事件发生，有分析人士指，艾未未此次“被失踪”，员工被警方带走、工作室被大批警察盘查事件，源于当局又一次挑战“维稳”的底线，惯用手法是暴力和恐吓。但认为中国当局并不会就此逮捕艾未未，关键意向是让强近在中国颇有影响力的彻底关闭工作室，逼迫其将工作室整体迁址柏林。早前有媒体消息指艾未未有意在德国柏林开设工作室。


也有部分中国年轻行动者，他们号称“草泥马一族”，大多为艾未未在Twitter微博的粉丝，认为艾未未被警方抓走，是中国当局对这位深具“草泥马”精神，挑战强权并坚持自由表达的艺术家的打压，这种打压早已经开始，从早前拆除他位于上海的新建工作室，到近期频繁以各种借口去他的工作室搜查和登记，及一直以来对他的监控甚至软禁，都是中国当局对独立思想的艺术家禀持的态度。艾未未在Twitter微博上即有七万多名粉丝，在艾未未被抓后，有粉丝呼吁发起行动。


德国之声就此和国际特赦机构及香港维权律师关注组取得联系，他们均表示获悉此事，非常震惊。中国维权律师关注组的执行秘书潘嘉伟表示，结合近期北京当局对“敏感地带”艺术展的几位艺术家进行抓捕的情况，他们会和香港的“独立媒体”等组织紧急磋商，对中国当局中对艺术家的打压发出抗议。他们也会和德国、捷克等在港的使馆会知此事。


一些获悉此事的国际机构及在国外的艺术家大多关注到，此事发生时发生时，正值德国“启蒙的艺术”展览在京开幕，欧洲的启蒙运动精神最重要的部分为对公共事务的参与精神，自由，民主等理念。中国当局对艺术家进行严厉的打压，有违启蒙之精神。


近年来，艾未未因为参与“5.12震后调查”、“上海大火调查”并发表公开谴责中国当局的言论，被认为是“具有政治敏感度”的艺术家，其在中国的艺术活动多次被限并被长期监控和多次软禁。

China blocks well-known artist from boarding plane

BEIJING -- China blocked one of its most famous contemporary artists from taking a flight to Hong Kong on Sunday and police later raided his Beijing studio, the man's assistant said.

The artist, Ai Weiwei, is an outspoken government critic and has been barred from going abroad before.

China has launched a massive crackdown on lawyers, writers and activists, arresting and detaining dozens since February when online calls for protests similar to those in the Middle East and North Africa began to circulate. Ai has been keeping an informal tally of those detentions on Twitter, where he has more than 70,000 followers.

The studio assistant, who asked not to be identified by name, said Ai was going through customs at the Beijing Capital International Airport early Sunday when two officials escorted him away, leaving a traveling companion to board the flight alone.

It was not clear whether the 53-year-old artist and architectural designer had been detained or why he was barred from taking the flight, the assistant said. Ai's cellphone could not be reached and airport police refused to comment.
Police later arrived at Ai's studio with a search warrant and took several staff members to a police station for questioning, said the assistant, who was among the group taken by police. A man who answered the phone at the police station said he would check on the case, then hung up the phone. Subsequent calls to the number rang unanswered.

Around two dozen uniformed and plainclothes police could be seen in and around Ai's studio Sunday afternoon. An Associated Press videographer was told by police to stop filming and leave the area.

Ai, an avant-garde artist who recently exhibited at the Tate Modern gallery in London, was stopped from boarding a flight to Seoul in November. That incident came shortly after he had been invited to attend the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony in Oslo, Norway, honoring jailed Chinese dissident Liu Xiaobo. Liu is serving an 11-year sentence for subversion.

Ai said at the time that police had blocked him at the boarding gate and showed him a handwritten note that said he could cause damage to national security by leaving.

The son of one of China's most famous modern poets, Ai was courted by the Communist government as a cultural ambassador before his advocacy on behalf of social activists apparently made him a target of Chinese authorities.

Known for his distinctive scraggly beard and stocky frame, Ai was a consultant for the futuristic Bird's Nest stadium at the Beijing Olympics before souring on the event. He was later beaten and detained while attempting to attend the trial of an advocate for victims of the devastating 2008 earthquake in the southwestern city of Chengdu.

Alison Klayman, an American filmmaker who has been working on a documentary about Ai for more than two years, said Beijing police visited Ai's studio three times in the past week, checking the passports and identification of Chinese and foreign assistants working there and some visiting architecture students from Europe.

"The focus seemed to be on the fact that he had foreign employees," Klayman said by telephone from New York.

China's best-known artist Ai Weiwei has been detained at Beijing airport this morning and police have surrounded his studio in the capital.

The 53-year-old, who designed the Olympic Bird's Nest stadium, has been an outspoken critic of the government. Although he has previously experienced harassment by officials, he appeared to be relatively protected by the status of his late father, a renowned poet, and his high international profile; last year, he created the Sunflower Seeds installation for Tate Modern.

His detention comes amid a wider crackdown on activists and dissidents, which human rights campaigners describe as the worst in over a decade. At least 23 people have been detained, mostly in relation to incitement to subversion or creating a disturbance. Three more have been formally arrested and more than a dozen are missing, including high profile human rights lawyers.

Ai was due to fly to Hong Kong for business this morning, but was detained at immigration on his way out of Beijing. An officer told an assistant who was travelling with him that the artist had "other business" and could not board the plane.

Between 15 and 20 uniformed and plain clothes police surrounded his studio in Caochangdi, in the north of the capital, and more were believed to be searching it. Power to the neighbourhood was cut off.

Men who appeared to be plainclothes police grabbed the phone of a Guardian journalist who took a photograph of the scene and deleted the image. A uniformed officer told the reporter: "You are not allowed to be on this street. You must leave."

One resident said: "I went outside to see what was going on and saw a lot of police…I cannot understand it. What has he done?"

Officials visited Ai's studio three times this week, saying they wanted to check that staff there – particularly foreigners – were registered correctly.

But his assistant said Ai appeared to have no particular concerns prior to his detention today.

Ai's mobile was not available and telephones at his studio rang unanswered. Posts about Ai on the popular Weibo microblog were deleted.

Twitter users reported that Ai's friend Wen Tao had been detained by police in Caochangdi. Shortly beforehand, replying to a friend enquiring whether he was all right, he had tweeted: "So far, so good". Wen's mobile was not available.

Beijing police said they did not know anything about either man. Asked about Ai, an airport police spokesman said: "I do not have the obligation to tell you the information. You may have got your information wrong; even if it is right, you have to go through certain procedures to make inquiries, not just make a phone call."

Earlier this week it emerged that Ai was setting up a studio in Berlin because of his increasing work in Europe.

But he told the Guardian that it would take at least two years to build the space and he would probably divide his time between Europe and China.
He said the situation in Beijing was "difficult" and added: "It is hard to know what will happen in a few years.

"I will never leave China behind unless I am forced to….Hopefully that is not going to happen."

Last year Ai was placed under house arrest after saying he would hold a party to mark the forced demolition of his studio in Shanghai.

In December he was prevented from leaving the country. Many dissidents had their movements restricted at the time because of the government's fears that people would attend the Nobel peace prize ceremony for jailed writer Liu Xiaobo.

Ai also complained he was twice assaulted by police in Sichuan, south west China.

Nicholas Bequelin, Asia researcher for Human Rights Watch, said: "This crackdown has not bottomed out yet.

"We are still in this process of weeding out any government critics, with no end in sight."

He added: "Ai Weiwei has been a bit of an outlier and the harassment against him has been more and more intense in the past few months.

"But I think the signal it sends is that if he can be arbitrarily harassed in this way, no one is safe."
