Barrhaven
Sportsplex

Thanks to an expected change in city policy, ground will break for the
Barrhaven Sportsplex on the southwest corner of Greenbank and
Cambrian roads in 2011. It will tentatively open in 2014.
The $51-million project will have multiple rinks, a swimming pool,
and possibly a gym.
Currently the city collects money from development builders
and uses the funds, called development charges, to pay for
municipal recreational facilities.
However, at an announcement made at the future site of the complex on June 18, planning and environment committee chair Peter
Hume said things are likely to change.
Hume and Harder proposed that once 50 per cent of the money is collected for any future recreation
facility, construction should begin with the city borrowing the rest to complete the project.
Debt would be paid off once the rest of the money from a particular development is collected.
This formula would accelerate the construction of facilities across the city by almost a decade.
Under the previous model, construction on the Barrhaven Sportsplex wouldn’t have started until
2019 at the earliest.
A Catholic school will also be built beside the Sportsplex along with a fire station
