Why Is Giving Back to the Community Important
before:
What is the most important thing you can do to change the world? You may say to cure disease, to create global peace or to save the environment. And many of you may go on to do such great things, but there’s something you can do right now. You can give back to the community by volunteering.
If you take a moment, pause, and think about your life. You know you are quite fortunate. You’ve heard stories of people in foreign lands who face conflict and starvation every day. And if even you look closer to home, there are people struggling with their own problems. From helping people do better in school to performing aid work in a foreign country, every
hour you dedicate is helping to shape the world.
You can consider volunteering as a type of exchange. You may not notice it, but volunteers are probably affecting your life right now. Almost every organization runs partly with the help of volunteers. Even in our cadet squadron, we wouldn’t be able to have our training or do any events, without the great work that our volunteers do. And they pass that torch onto you, which is why we do tag days and community parades. During Remembrance Day, when you’re standing at attention in the cold, you look up and you see the veterans, and then you remember why you’re there. It’s someone you’ve never met before, yet you feela great deal of appreciation as you take the time to commemorate their actions.
The act of volunteer benefits others, but it also benefits you. When you volunteer, you are thrust into an environment where you meet difference people. Volunteering is a great way to learn new skills and provide career experience. And the best part is, you can do almost anything you want. All you have to do pick up the phone, or send an email. An organization
can always use a volunteer. There might even be perks, a free concert pass, even a trip to another country.
People who become volunteers lead richer, happier and more rewarding lives. So, next time you find a great volunteer opportunity, go for it. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain.
After:
In cadets, one of the key components is giving back to the community. Throughout the year, we have a couple of tag days to raise money for the Squadron. On November 11, we go to downtown Ottawa to attend the Remembrance Day Ceremony. During Christmas, we march in the Santa Claus Parade. In volunteering our time, we give back to the community. But have you ever stopped to think about why we give back the community?
First, it creates a better community for us to live in. When we take part in tag days, we sacrifice a bit of our time to raise money for our Squadron. All of this money goes to organizing the programs to enhance our skills, and raise a better generation. And every year, I can remember that one former cadet or veteran that came up to me to tell their story in the cadet program, and encourage me to continue. During Remembrance Day, we take time off school to be a part of the ceremony and show our respect for the veterans who have fought in past wars. I did talk to a few veterans, and they told me that they do appreciate it when we take the time to commemorate their actions. Close to Christmas, we join the Santa Claus Parade in Orleans. Some cadets play in the marching band and others hand out candy. You realize it’s worth it when you see the massive crowds lined up beside the street and the smiles on the children’s faces when you give them candy.
On a bigger scale, sometimes I take a moment, pause, and think about my life. I know I are quite fortunate. More than 3 billion people live on less than $2.50 and 22,000 children die each day due to poverty. With the recent earthquake in Japan, which is one of the most prepared nations in the world, the death toll has exceeded 18,000. And there are organizations we can make donations to or volunteer with such as the Red Cross, Save the Children and the Salvation Army. With the help of people giving back to the community, these organizations can help those less fortunate live a better life.
Giving back to the community also benefits us as youth. It gives us a sense of achievement and a chance to grow. A few years ago, I volunteered for the Classic Air Rallye at the Aviation museum. It was an outdoor event, where antique planes would fly in to be put on display. We were given the responsibility of ensuring the safety of the attendees. My job was to help set up and keep attendees away while planes were taking off or landing. I needed to coordinate with the other cadet volunteers to make sure that any eager photographers didn’t step onto the runway. At times, there were so many people, that we formed a line to ensure no one got past us. At the end, we knew we did our job successfully, because no one got hit by a plane. Through this experience, we learned to work together and communicate very well so that no one got past us. There are many similar volunteering opportunities in cadets where we are entrusted with a responsibility and this helps us to develop our skills and become a stronger citizen.
In essence, giving back to the community creates a better world to live in. Giving back also gives us youth a chance to learn more and grow stronger. I am grateful for all of the volunteer opportunities that I participate in through cadets. Because I know why it’s important to give back to the community. Thank you.
