Engine oil leaking

Normally that indicate you have engine oil leakage.

There are 2 possibilities:
1) Minor leaking - you won't see black engine oil on the floor, but you consistently smell the burning oil
2) Serious leaking - you easily identify black engine oil on the floor

To identify possibility 1:
1a) Open the front hood, look at around the engine cover for wet black oil
1b) Raise the car, look around the oil filter for wet black oil. Clean the area with dry tower/newspaper, that help to spot
1c) Open hood, see any white smog coming out from the hood. You have to wait for the engine to heat up > 15 min though
1d) Sent to any mechanic shop, they will try option 1a to 1c for you

To identify possibility 2:
2a) Move the car away, and you can immediately see oil on the floor. For such a serious condition, your engine oil should fully drain within 1 day
2b) Sent car to any mechanic, they will identify immediately once they jack/raise the car up

If you repair yourself, then I'll wait for you to post your finding, before suggest the action.

In all cases, it is due to oil seal, either in engine cover, or oil filter. Price $10 - $40, while mechanic will mark up 30% - 50% + labor

Really enjoy feels reply :))
Just wondering if heating coil should be inspected for any leaks too?

Heating coil leakage

Heating coil is not related to this topic, nor giving any smell.

Anyway, I assume you are changing topic. Heating coil for all Japanese cars are inside the car cabin, not under the front hood. If there is a leakage, the carpet should be wet, and when the coolant warm up, the coolant+water will become vapor.

I am not familiar with American car design, so no comment on that

So you mean we may feel the excessive moisture or even steam but never the smell.
Hope I understood you correctly?
BTW, There's an under hood design for North American cars but I don't know how popular it is.

You understand me correctly. Japanese car, e.g. Honda, branch out the coolant hose into the car cabinet, where the heating coil located. Then the air blow through the coil, and warm up the air.

If it leaks, the 180 C coolant + water can easily turn into steam. Coolant + water does has little smell, but not strong. You can get a $7 coolant and smell at it directly

Nah, I decide not to smell the coolant even I have couple of them in my garage.
On other hand, I really appreciate your very knowledgeable reply. Thanks feels!

there's no such thing as heating coil

空调core都是靠coolant加热的,所有车都这样

Thanks for pointing it out!
I didn't choose the term carefully and sorry for the confusion.
If you read through our discussion and you will see lots of key words like excessive moisture, steam, coolant, and blow.
So hope you may realize the real stuff we are talking about here is the "heating block" or "heater core".
Thanks again.

很有可能是heater core漏coolant了

不过coolant烧干的时候味道是怪怪的。。。说不出来,苦的吧,往发动机上弄两滴就能闻到了
