Well, if you are working in 7am-3pm shift. Then you have lots of tiime for other things in life. Shopping, other business, enjoying with family...etc.
There are several things I consider before joining the governement (permanent now)
1) Salary (50k, starting). No bad for entry level.
2) Stability. Very stable, union will protect us.
3) Technical development. Employer will pay for most of the training.
4) Pressure. There are but very minimal since many projects are span across 3-5 years.
5) Pension. I only trust public section pension. Its define profit. years of service x last 5 years of highest salary.
6) Switch jobs. There is no place like the government can provide you with lots choices after you join them. You can be IT this year, and become audit few years later (provide trainings are obtained)
7) Other business. I have my enough time in the afternoon to develop my other business. This is the biggest plus for me. I have the whole afternoon to develop my system. If in case I succeed, I can quit my job.

Enjoy and consider your offer.

Just want to share my two cents. I am not familiar with IT positions either. But for ES positions, one usually starts at ES02 (46 to 53K) or ES03 (55 to 64K). These are real entry levels - no experience required. If you are strong and lucky (e.g. a PhD), sometimes you can start at ES04 (66 to 76K). It is very common to move to senior levels (ES05) after 3 to 5 years (76 to 86K) and move to ES06 after a few years again (86 to 96K). Although a lot of senior positions require bilingual, there are quite a few English essential senior positions there. And the government pays everything for your language training. Sometimes you can go on full-time language training for half a year or one year to get your BBB or CBC. A lot of Chinese working in the federal gov't achieved bilingual levels. Many many Chinese work at senior levels after several years in the public service. I know a Chinese who gets to a senior position in two years in the government.

BTW, the overall pay rates usually go up every 2 to 3 years to take into account the inflation.

Another advantage of working in the federal gov't is that you have tons of chances to move around and advance within the public service.

Other things like pension, benefits, all kinds of leave and so on may also be advantages, depending on individual situations. I cannot agree more: perfect for moms aged 30+. :)

how hard is it to get a job in the Federal ? I tried so many....I wrote the graduate recruitment exams last November......and passed....was short list for more than 10 positions, but only one considered me further and had a phone interview last week...but required bilingual...why bilingual for entry-level?

was short listed for a few Auditors positions....even I am educated in both finance and IT, but I have many IT experience(mostly co-op) and only have IT experience.....will that be reason enough for them to exclude me for such financial positions?

man! everything seems so close but nothing seems to work......and everything seems to take forever...it makes you suicidal

actually it is very hard, and for most of the time even u are in the pool then the chance is you still not get the job eventually.

my suggestion is try to get a job from private sector first, if you really wanna join the federal goverment, then keep trying. with some luck maybe you will get one eventually.

I know some ppl they tried 7 even 10 years before they got in.
keep trying but no one could promise you anything at all.

good luck:):):)

thank you....
private sector seems not any easier for me.....actually kind of working now, but my job sucks and has nothing to do with my education....working there everyday is killing me.....

French BBB

Can anybody share your experience that how long have you taken to get the French BBB? I am considering taking French and need some encouragement. Thanks.

Out of the government, 8 months full-time studies plus 2 months internship in a french language environment.

Within the government, 1 on 1 intensive training for 6 months.

For both of the cases above, shut off your english channels on your tv and radio throughout the studies till you pass the evaluation (better move to quebec during this period :) . Good luck!

Well, if you are working in 7am-3pm shift. Then you have lots of tiime for other things in life. Shopping, other business, enjoying with family...etc. Why can't IT starts work at 7 if the rest of the team starts at 7 or 7:30? Don't fix yourself in a 9-5 job. We are promoting flexiblity. Shopping? most of us do, why shopping centre die after lunch and live again after 3:30, cause most of govt worker finishes at 3. You might not have the energy, but others do. I am speaking general. I am IT worker, can't imagine I have full of energy to do stuff after work.
There are several things I consider before joining the governement (permanent now)
1) Salary (50k, starting). No bad for entry level.
If you sit still for next 5-6 years, you will be molded, if you are in private IT, if you not work hard for 5-6 years, you will be fired.
2) Stability. Very stable, union will protect us.(政府不会开除你,但是,如果你的REVIEW不好,你会被踢来踢去,比开除你还痛苦) There are quite a lots of IFs, if your review no good, then its your problem. Private section will not move you around, you will be fire.
3) Technical development. Employer will pay for most of the training.(说实话,这些TRAINING根本没什么用,真要开发新项目,还是要雇用CONSULTANTS。 Training is to advance yourself. Think why they need to hire consultants? Cause consultants has proper training. What training? I don't know, but proper. If you don't have training, you are not going anywhere.
4) Pressure. There are but very minimal since many projects are span across 3-5 years.(压力还是有的,不是在做项目上,而是如何能得到提升,有人干了十年还是CS-1,一般中国人都是CS-2,很少CS-3。 You have to understand why there are people still at CS-01 after 10 years, and why myself promoted to CS-02 in 13 months. There are different mindset, hardworkingness and some degree of luck. Many of chinese are CS-02, so what? If they are satisfy with where they are. CS-03 is not just about money, its about responsibilities. If anyone cannot or do not want any extra work, they will stay at CS-02 level.
5) Pension. I only trust public section pension. Its define profit. years of service x last 5 years of highest salary.(还是那句话,如果你混过35年,你的工资还是最少的,而且你还不知道你能有多少年命拿PENSION。) If you are in private, your pension will be zero(0) if the fund is collapsed.
6) Switch jobs. There is no place like the government can provide you with lots choices after you join them. You can be IT this year, and become audit few years later (provide trainings are obtained) Your point of views are very special. IF you are not working hard, IF your review is not good. Too many IFs, and they are all negatives. IF all of you is about negatives, then don't work. What iF you work hard? What IF your review is good? What IF your networking is extensive? What IF all the positives are there for you?
7) Other business. I have my enough time in the afternoon to develop my other business. This is the biggest plus for me. I have the whole afternoon to develop my system. If in case I succeed, I can quit my job.
(如果你干IT的,这种可能性根本不存在,即使有也千万别让同事知道) I believe your thinking is too conservative, I am doing side jobs after fulltime job. I am developing my own IT investment system. I am teaching in the college at night. I am an investment advisor. So what? All my team members in IT knows that. My Project Leader knows, my Manager knows, my co-workers all know. They are supportive and congratulate me on the good work.

This is the first time I read such a negative reply to my post. But I really spent time to read and response to each of your concerns. I don't know why you are so negatives, and why no blue about your career. If anything I can advise, feel free to send me a private message.
