Briefs: Overnight fires in Ottawa

A kitchen, a garage and an unoccupied home were all destroyed in a trio of unrelated fires Saturday night. A mother and her two children managed to escape serious injury from a fire in their kitchen at 3275 McCarthy Road near the Ottawa Airport.Paramedics treated the mother for smoke inhalation and took the two children to the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario as a precautionary measure.The second-floor kitchen was “gutted” as a result of the fire, Marc Messier, spokesman for the fire department, wrote on Twitter. There was also damage to the third floor of the building.The fire department estimates the fire, which started at around 10 p.m., caused $50,000 in total damage to the building.The cause of the fire has not been determined.
