will an emission test facility do the test with check light on? my check light is on but nothing wrong. anybody here has the same experience?

They won't touch your car if the check engine light is on since they probably won't read the code on the spot. Even they read the code, without probably diagnostic, they can't confirm the problem.

Long story short....clear the light first :)

thanks. by any chance it can pass the test by reseting the light?

After you reset the light and if the problem(s) are still there. The light will probably comes up again in a very short period of time.

OK

Don't worry. I just past the E-test a few days ago with the check-engine light on for a couple of years-it is just the sensor problem which I have checked for a few times.

Good luck!

thanks wqh7711. but some body like dkwan said the test facility wont even touch a car with the light on. maybe it is facility-depended?

just let everybody know that i went to one of oil changers for emission test with check-light on (code P0446 - emission control system related) and passed the test with a really good result. so the saying by dkwan was incorrect...

Thanks for the update.

Our technicians are Ontario Certified Drive Clean Inspector.
According to Ontario law, if the car has check engine light on, inspector should not even put the car onto the emission test.

A good sensor doesn't guarantee you will pass the test. On the other hand, a bad sensor not necessary failing the test. The idea is the "service station cannot run the emission test while check engine light is on".

As a certified technician, I need to clarify that the statement "passing emission test when check engine light on" is not necessary false but I am saying "Service station cannot even start the test in the very beginning".

Your oil changer is already running their own rules on this test.

well, i told them about check-light on and the code, and they didn't even bother about it. my case shows that check-light on doesn't always fail on the e-test even with the code p0446. so if u have a check-light on and don't wanna fix it for hundreds bucks more or need to do e-test, just bring the car in and do the test, trust me u will have a pretty good chance to get it passed...

You think that's only a story?

Ottawa Citizen just summarized the complex regulation into simple English.

Here is the Drive Clean Guide from the Ministry:

http://www.ene.gov.on.ca/stdprodcon...sources/documents/resource/stdprod_080001.pdf

Read the Doc., ..., it says "MIL Malfunction Indicator Light - a visual light on a vehicle’s dashboard that indicates
when there is a problem with a vehicle’s emissions system; sometimes referred to
as the “Check Engine” light".

The requirement is to make sure the "MIL" functional. It doesn't say that you can't get your vehicle to test, ...,and can't pass the test. :p:blink:

By the way, you can simply reset the "Check Engine" light by disconnect/reconnect your car bettery, ... :D
