about emission test

will an emission test facility do the test with check light on? my check light is on but nothing wrong. anybody here has the same experience?

According to "dkwan" referred document, to have "Check Engine" light on only means the "MIL" is functional.

To answer your question, yes, the "Check Engine" light will be tested in an emission testing, ..., and you may be able to pass the emission test with the light on.

my car has been check-light on (code P0446) for many years,i always cancelled by use code reader,and did not passed E-test last year..after spend $1000 then passed E-test..

Read the Doc., ..., it says "MIL Malfunction Indicator Light - a visual light on a vehicle’s dashboard that indicates
when there is a problem with a vehicle’s emissions system; sometimes referred to
as the “Check Engine” light".

The requirement is to make sure the "MIL" functional. It doesn't say that you can't get your vehicle to test, ...,and can't pass the test. :blink:

By the way, you can simply reset the "Check Engine" light by disconnect/reconnect your car bettery, ...

If there is nothing wrong with your vehicle, the light will not be on.

If there is something wrong with with your vehicle, the light maybe on or not.

If you have a bomb installed on the car, I guess it is reasonable for garage to ask you to remove it before they can work on it

But, some garage may be only concerned about money, not the bomb

I work @ Hunt Club Volkswagen. It's your choice to choose which shop to repair your vehicle not mine.

I am simply pointing out the fact that vehicle with check engine light on will not pass e-test. If another shop choose to ignore the regulation, it's the shop's responsibility / vehicle's owner's risk for ignoring.

The other thing I would like to point out based on this case is P0446 fault code is stored in system. If the testing facility just did a regular test(just testing the emission coming out of the exhaust), the car may pass the test. However, P0446 fault indicates a evap leak which mean there might be a leak in evap system(fuel tank ventilation system). In simple word, releasing fuel fume into air which means polluting the air - fuel fume is worse than emission coming out of exhaust.

As people who work in shop, we are trying to fix cars & be responsible for the environment. It's our job to advise our customer with all the information even if it's a bad news for them. However, there are shops choose to ignore these, which is why automotive repairing industry has a bad reputation some time.

just let everybody know that i went to one of oil changers for emission test with check-light on (code P0446 - emission control system related) and passed the test with a really good result. so the saying by dkwan was incorrect...

It's just a discussion in here. I am just trying to answer some question with professional opinion. I don't think you are being rational here. I didn't say it's was P0446 - the original poster said it's P0446.

BTW, If the Passat that your described is in our shop, and the owner can show us/duplicate what he is describing, I will fix it!!!

哥们，这个我觉得吧，大家基本点不同在于，做 Emission Test，有一硬性条件，check engine light on, 那就过不了。 是消掉了这个灯，还是把它修好，这是两个不同的解决方式
