C. difficile outbreak declared at Ottawa Hospital’s General Campus

The Ottawa Hospital has declared an outbreak of C. difficile at its General Campus, following the discovery of a fifth patient this week with the diarrhea-causing bacteria. All the cases were diagnosed in the hospital’s 5 West ward, which treats cancer patients. This is creating some unique problems for hospital officials because most of the people in the ward are on antibiotics and that makes it more likely a patient will contract C. difficile.
