请经常往返Toronto和Ottawa的前辈进来下

I used to drive between Ottawa and Toronto many times a year and I encountered conditions from freezing rain to heavy snow on 401, so I guess I can provide you some good advices.

Even you're on major highway, snow could come any time during your trip. You may end up driving in snow before the snow removal crew arrive. I highly recommend using winter tires. Another thing no one mentioned is that you should carry enough windshield fluid. Fill it up before you leave. It will be very useful for maintaining a clear sight. Heavy fog may appear on 416 under certain condition, which may be dangerous. In this case, drive with extreme caution because multiple car pile-up occured before when fog mixed with black ice on 416. Fill up your tank at Port Hope on 401E, it's much cheaper than Toronto. On your way back, fill up in Ottawa and again at Port Hope on 401W.

哦, 月下还搞相机和房子?我以为相机是资深,熊猫等,房子是mmg?

Coffee Machine有什么高见啊?是不是先做个Latte让哥看看水平怎么样?来个double foam的:blowzy:

I have been traveling every week to and fro Ottawa and Toronto since 2000.
Besides the above, I want to add my 2 cents :
1. Car tune up before winter (CHECK car battery, wiper blade, spark plug, brake. Change engine oil to 5W30)
2. Windshield fluid better with de-icer
3. A shovel
4. Chocolate bar (energy...), hot drink, blanket
5. Member of any CAA/Canadian Tire Club ... (just in case you need road side assistance)
6. Cell phone fully charged
7. Defensive instead of aggressive (Slow is better than fast)

I have seen a lot of super cars (Jeep, TRUCKS, SUV) ended up in the ditch.

Snow Tire, AWD, ABS, etc are all useless if there is BLACK Ice.

The worse case scenario your may encounter is WHITE OUT, visibility can be as low as 50 meters, keep your car speed slow and make sure you have enough distance between your car and the car in front. If panic, turn on HAZARD light. Also, be patience, don't make unnecessary lane change (usually black ice accumulated between lanes).

It is better LATE than never...

Again, my 2 cents

Good luck

Thank you for your reply.

According to your experience, I should drive slowly all the way and be ware of black ice. I think it is the most dangerous because I don't have snow tires yet. I need my first month pay check to have them on.

By the way, it is a good advice to fill up the tank in Port Hope. It is much cheaper than that in Toronto. Everything in Toronto is so expensive, especially auto insurance. I do really need to have a new quote after changing the address from Toronto to Ottawa.

Thanks again.

新手建议走416-401。7-115-401虽然短但是弯路很多,opp多。
我一般天气好就走7-115-401。天气差就走401.

Your 2 cents are pretty useful. I will double check what you said before I start the trip. Thanks a lot.

作为一个新手 我还是觉得401-416比较适合我开
尤其是现在天气还不确定的情况下
希望那天别下大雪。。。。
Thanks anyway

I recommend this windshield water fluid:
http://www.canadiantire.ca/AST/brow.../Rain-X+Windshield+Washer+Fluid.jsp?locale=en

By the way, the additive is de-icer, not anti-freeze.
If you park you car outside, and you found your wipers were ICED, you either use your scrapper to separate your wiper from windshield (also hot air inside the car to warm windshield), you can buy this spray:
http://www.canadiantire.ca/AST/brow...ter+Windshield+&+Window+De-icer.jsp?locale=en (Rain X also this spray, a little bit more expensive), spray onto your wiper, wait for two minutes, the fluid will melt the ice and your wiper blade is free. This has the benefit of not breaking your wiper blade, the cost of the spray is cheaper than wiper blade, and the inconvenience of changing it (and gas money spent on warming up windshield).
Sometimes, ice built up between your car door and car body, just spray onto the ice, the door can be opened after two minutes.
Welcome to Ottawa, city of freezing rain and black ice....
