Radical Muslims take passages from the Koran out of context to justify their militant positions, accused terrorist conspirator told an Ottawa jury Tuesday.

At the invitation of his lawyer Mark Ertel, Ahmed gave the court a short explanation on the significance of Chapter Nine of the Muslim holy book — a chapter dealing with war and peace.

Ahmed, a devout Muslim, has told the court that he is in the throes of memorizing the Koran and in so doing is following the path of many young Muslims.

The former diagnostic imaging technician at The Ottawa Hospital, has pleaded not guilty to three terrorism-related offences: conspiring with two others to facilitate a terrorist activity, participating in the activities of a terrorist group, and possessing an explosive device.

Ahmed, a married father of three young children, agreed that he had taken part in political rallies and anti-war demonstrations against the U.S. invasions of Iraq an Afghanistan and in support of Palestinians.

In support of those positions, 30-year-old Ahmed organized a “media watch” group to react to what he and colleagues determined was Islamophobic coverage in mainstream media and to take public positions on related issues.

He told the jury that he had written to Prime Minister Stephen Harper to protest Canada’s position on the Israeli-Palestinian situation and had received a “not very satisfactory response.”

Ahmed testified Monday that he would never harm Canada or his fellow Canadians.

Ertel is portraying Ahmed as a politically engaged, well-informed and often activist Canadian with specific views about international affairs — especially as they impact ordinary Muslims internationally.

Although not part of the prosecution evidence, Ertel has emphasized that Ahmed’s range of reading and viewing has embraced many western sources, including U.S. filmmaker Michael Moore and Robert Fisk, a British journalist considered one of the world’s foremost western authorities on the Middle East.

Ahmed is denying that he knew that his alleged co-conspirator — the alleged ringleader of the group — had foreign terrorist connections.

He also denies that he ever contemplated training abroad as a terrorist.

The trial is continuing.
