The Strandherd-Armstrong Bridge should finally open in July, following numerous delays that pushed back the project.
The $48-million bridge was originally supposed to be finished in early 2012. But the opening was pushed back until late this summer because of problems including late delivery of the arches and the original bridge building company going into receivership.
As of May 2013, delays to the bridge, meant to connect Barrhaven and Riverside South over the Rideau River, were expected to cost an extra $1.6 million.
“It now looks like it’s going to be open sometime in July,” Mayor Jim Watson said this week.
“We haven’t narrowed down the exact date but certainly we’re very pleased that finally, after a long delay, the project is going to open about a month early.”
Until now, the latest anticipated date for the bridge had been in August.
“It’s been a frustrating experience for people in the south end but it’s going to be a great addition to traffic management,” Watson said.
Final testing, landscaping and concrete work needs to be finished, but “it’s not a lot of work,” Watson said.
