Two workers were rescued by Gatineau Fire Services after the crane they were in broke early Saturday morning.
Platoon chief Guy Dagenais said a crane had been placed on the Lie`vre bridge, part of Highway 50 near Buckingham, and two men had been lowered in the crane basket so they could repair on the underside of the bridge, part of routine maintenance.
The hydraulic system holding the basket in place broke at about 8 a.m., and the basket tipped and dropped about 10-feet before the safety mechanism kicked in.
Workers were not able to raise the basket and, not knowing how long the safety mechanism would hold, they placed a call to emergency services.
The workmen were left dangling about 100-feet above the dry riverbed until fire services arrived. The Lie`vre River is dammed at this location.
The workers were rescued without injury, “only a good scare,” said Dagenais.
