Impatient Highway 50 drivers beware: If you fudge the road rules, even a little bit, you won’t get away with it, at least not this September.

The Sûreté du Québec will be watching like hawks, tickets in hand.

Bad drivers cutting corners on Highway 50 to get mere centimetres ahead have prompted Quebec police to ramp up surveillance in the area. Over the next several weeks, police say drivers can expect a blitz on reckless maneuvers.

The beginning of the school year means more drivers on the road and heavier traffic. Police fear over-confident drivers will pose a danger to other motorists, near the Boul. Lorrain highway exits in particular, east of Gatineau.

After-work commuters are guilty of the worst violations. Police noticed some drivers speed along the eastbound highway shoulder beginning at the Labrosse access lane, zipping unsafely towards the Boul. Lorrain exit. Other drivers are pulling illegal U-turns between the Labrosse and Lorrain exits because of construction around the Blanche river.

Interventions by the SQ are meant to improve safety for everyone on the road, but also to educate bad drivers on how badly they are driving. There are negative consequences to these violations (such as fines) and drivers should adopt safer, more courteous behaviour, police said.
