Ottawa firefighters raced to a south Ottawa farm Thursday night after reports that a least three buildings, including a house, had been “flattened” by a thunderous explosion.

Greely-area residents told the fire service they heard a “big bang” about 8:30 p.m., prompting the fire department to issue a two-alarm fire call and send a hazardous material team to 1934 Stagecoach Road, east of Manotick. At least 50 fire firefighters were on scene at the height of the fire.

“The whole house shook,” said Jeremy Mehme, who lives nearby along Stagecoach Road. “I looked outside and there was a big ball of fire rising into the sky.”

Patrick Smith, who lives about two kilometres from where the scene, said he was watching the Senators game when he heard the explosion.

“It kind of threw the whole family through a loop,” Smith said, describing the explosion as “one loud crash” that shook his house.

“It sounded like a cannon going off,” said Glenn Powers, who lives about 20 kilometres from the fire scene and came to see what had happened. “I thought maybe it was a propane tank.”

Whatever it was, it certainly attracted attention.

“The library shook like crazy,” Ottawa school trustee Mark Fisher, who was at a meeting at Castor Valley Elementary School, about 10 kilometres from the scene, posted on his Facebook page. “I understand now that it was caused by an explosion in Greely. I hope everybody is safe.”

“Our whole neighbourhood heard and felt a big bang,” one resident posted on Twitter. “Still hearing more and more sirens.”

“Huge explosion shock wave felt in the Metcalfe, Greely and Country Hill Estates area,” tweeted another.

Initially at least, there were no reports of injuries and the fire was declared under control by 10:30 p.m. even though it was still burning.

Fire crews, after finding evidence related to the explosion were searching the area for possible victims.

Fire department spokesman Marc Messier said he could not say with certainty no one had been hurt or killed. “There’s stuff everywhere.”

Paramedics were on scene, but area residents said they saw no ambulances racing away from the fire site.

Police, meanwhile, said Stagecoach Road was between Parkway and Old Prescott roads would be closed until further notice. Motorists were advised to avoid the area.
