Russell town councillor Pierre Leroux has joined the delayed election for mayor in the Township of Russell, following the sudden death of incumbent Jean-Paul St. Pierre two weeks ago.
City officials decided to postpone the election for mayor until Dec. 12-15 to allow the community to grieve the loss of the popular official and to allow for possible new candidates.
At the time of his death, St. Pierre’s only opponent was his cousin, Donald St. Pierre. Individuals interested in the position have until Friday to complete their nomination forms.
Jean Paul St. Pierre, 65, or JP as he was popularly known in the region, had been mayor of the municipality east of Ottawa since 2010. The former RCMP officer was first elected to council in 2006.
