A man who had recently moved from Ottawa to Fort McMurray, Alta., has been shot and killed.

RCMP in Wood Buffalo, Alta., said 28-year-old Mustafa Mattan died Monday night. Police said they were responding to a report of gunshots in an apartment complex at about 11:20 p.m. when they found Mattan.

Mattan regularly attended the Assalam mosque on St. Laurent Blvd. when he lived in Ottawa.

The mosque’s president said Thursday that Mattan went to Alberta to save money to get married.

“We’re heartbroken,” said Abdulhakim Moalimishak. “For him to be gunned down in this fashion, it’s devastating for us.”

Moalimishak said Mattan helped out his siblings, went to school and stayed out of trouble.

“He was a very gentle being,” Moalimishak said. “He was very kind, considerate young man.”
