The jobless rate in the National Capital Region hit 7.2 per cent in February, up from 6.9 per cent in January and the highest level since December, 2003, Statistics Canada announced Friday.

The region added a meagre 500 jobs in the month, while the labour force added 2,900 jobseekers, to push number of jobless up a net 2,400.

Jobs in public administration were fairly stable in February, down about 600 positions to 145,000 from 145,600 in January.

Drilling down to federal government jobs, there were 127,800 in the NCR in February, compared to 129,500 in January. This shows some stability, however, as this compares with 124,800 a year ago.

The biggest hit appeared to be in the hotels and restaurants sector, which lost some 5,500 jobs.

Tech jobs in NCR suffered their sixth straight monthly decline, down to 42,900 in February vs 45,100 in January. A year ago, the sector employed 57,800.

Nationally, Canada’s employment picture changed little in February, although the jobless rate did climb to 6.8 per cent, the highest since September, from a level of 6.6 per cent in January.

Nationwide employment fell by 1,000 positions, and the jobless rate rose to 6.8 percent, the highest since September, from 6.6 percent in January, Statistics Canada said Friday in Ottawa.
