The jobless rate in the Capital region tumbled in January to its lowest level since last March, dropping to 5.2 per cent, compared with 5.5 per cent in December.
The economy added 4,700 net new jobs while labour force increased by 3,100, according to Statistics Canada.
Drilling down, government and tech jobs in the capital were moving in opposite directions.
Federal government employment slipped to 124,600 in January, compared with 128,900 in December. Nearly all of the federal job losses occurred on the Ottawa side of the river.
Meanwhile, technology jobs rose to 50,500 compared with 48,500 in December.
The jobless rate in Gatineau fell to 4.8 per cent in January compared with five per cent in December, while Ottawa’s jobless rate was 5.4 per cent vs 5.6 per cent over same period.
Nationally, the jobless rate rose to 5.9 per cent in January, as the economy lost a net 88,000 jobs, the steepest one-month decline in nine years.
