Winter hasn’t relinquished its grip on the region yet, as a late spring snow storm caused traffic chaos Friday morning.

The 417 eastbound was closed for an hour this morning due to a crash near Carling Avenue, causing big traffic backups along the highway during the morning rush-hour.

According to police, the crash at about 7 a.m. involved several cars. It was reopened around 8 a.m.

The accidents added to what was a busy morning for the Ontario Provincial Police who responded to more than a dozen crashes on the area’s highways.

The OPP warned drivers to slow down and maintain safe distances between vehicles.

According to a spokesman for the Ottawa Police Service the bad weather was causing a number of fender-benders on city streets, however no serious collisions were reported. The scene was similar in Gatineau, where more than 10 minor collisions were reported. There were no serious injuries reported there either.

Area school boards said the slippery roads were also playing havoc with schoolbus schedules and parents were advised to check with their providers.

The traffic havoc comes as a small storm system is moving its way through the nation’s capital bringing snow squalls and frozen roads for much of the morning. According to Environment Canada, temperatures will remain below zero, getting to around -5 C this morning, before falling to -14 overnight. The snow is expected to end this afternoon, however the cloud cover will remain into Saturday.
