A Gatineau man is missing after two people fell through the ice of the Ottawa River on Monday night.
Authorities were called around 10:30 p.m. Two people had been on the ice behind a local factory, Gatineau police said. The Ottawa fire department said they had been on the Sir George Etienne Cartier Parkway. It was not immediately clear what they had been doing there.
“The ice broke under their feet and two persons fell in the water,” said Simon Richer of the Gatineau police.
Firefighters using a boat were able to retrieve a 16-year-old boy, but not the other man.
Authorities were still speaking to the boy about what had happened. A K-9 unit was brought in to help search for his companion in the hopes that he might have made it back to land, police said. A search was conducted near Kettle Island.
“With the temperature of the water and everything the chances of finding him alive are pretty slim,” Richer admitted.
