Ottawa police have arrested and charged a woman after a video posted to Facebook showed a gang-sexual attack on one woman.

Police would not disclose the name of the woman arrested but the Citizen has learned she has been charged with several offences, including forcible confinement, kidnapping and sexual assault.

The investigation began when a video of the attack, which shows four women shaving the underarms and pubic area of the victim, was posted online. Police were notified by members of the Congolese community in Ottawa who began seeing the video online. Police believe that all four female suspects in the case are Congolese.

Police spokeswoman Carole Lavigne said the police force would not be speaking to the case to protect the victim’s identity and because the matter is now before the court. Lavigne defended the force’s decision to not issue a news release on the file when police began their investigation, saying that investigators do not suspect that there are other victims and are not looking for witnesses in the case.

The Citizen has learned, however, that police continue to investigate the case and the three remaining women involved in the video. The Citizen has not seen the video.

Police believe the attack was carried out by a group of women bent on revenge and humiliating the victim.

The woman appeared in court Thursday and was remanded into custody. She is next to appear in court July 16.
