Police were to resume the search Friday morning for a young man who disappeared in the Gatineau River in Wakefield Thursday evening.

“He was part of a group that was swimming in the river,” a spokesman for the MRC des Collines police said Friday.

The group were on the shore just downstream from the red covered bridge near the north end of Wakefield.

The young man was pulled away by the river current and disappeared about 7:30 p.m., police said. They were not immediately able to confirm reports circulating at the scene Thursday evening that he is a non-swimmer.

He is believed to be a 23-year-old visitor to the area.

The area is a popular swimming spot. Diving from the bridge has also been popular locally, though it is now banned.

MRC and Sûreté du Québec officers were searching late into the night Thursday and divers were expected back on scene Friday.
