A couple of hundred demonstrators, many dressed in Birkenstock sandals and funereal black clothes and some wearing widow’s veils, marched silently along Wellington Street Saturday to mourn what they describe as a long list of “victims of Harperism.”

Organizers say they were inspired by their opposition to the controversial Victims of Communism memorial proposed for the front yard of the Supreme Court of Canada.

As their Facebook description said: “Gather at western lawn of Supreme Court (proposed site for Harper memorial for victims of communism) … for a simple, powerful, theatrical event mourning our many losses during 10 years of the Harper government. (A) silent march to Parliament Hill.”

Among the items mourned were the “silencing” of public servants and scientists, the abolition of the full census, unpopular changes to the Electoral Act and a host of other measures.

A memorial march for the victims of Harperism took place Saturday Sept. 19, 2015 starting from the Supreme Court Lawn and marching to Parliament Hill. Protestors wore all black in the anti-Stephen Harper gathering protesting the victims of Harperism.
