The United Way campaign announced a $16 million goal at its Ottawa City Hall launch on Thursday.

The United Way is framing the goal in terms of “changing lives” — it aims to change the lives of 57,200 people with the funds raised in this year’s campaign. That translates into $16 million, a drop from last year’s goal of $17.2 million.

In recent years, Ottawa’s United Way campaigns have not reached their stated goals. By last May, the 2014-15 campaign was still $1.3 million short. The 2013-14 campaign took in $16.7 million, but it also fell short of its goal. A smaller public service and competing demands for the charitable dollar have been among the reasons.

Campaign co-chair Ottawa Police Chief Charles Bordeleau conceded that numbers have been sliding, but he said he believes the campaign has hit a turning point.

The United Way campaign’s approach has shifted to telling stories about the people who have benefited from its partners’ programs, and those stories have been tailored to specific audiences.

Bordeleau, for example, has been a police officer since he was 21 years old.

“I talk about my experience and that of my officers and what we see on a daily basis, whether it’s breakfast clubs for young children or youth in conflict with the law who have a mentor and a roof over their head.”

Bordeleau’s co-chair is Danya Vered, a volunteer and consultant at StrategyCorp Inc., and she’s helping by telling these kinds of stories online and through social media for young potential donors.

The United Way’s partner agencies include those focused on children, people in crisis, the homeless, immigrants, the disabled, and those struggling with addictions and mental health problems. Donors give through payroll deductions, fundraising events and through online contributions through the United Way’s website.

Bordeleau said he was confident the campaign will meet the $16-million goal.

Ottawa is a generous and caring community. The goal is realistic. I’m confident Ottawa will step up.”
