A 35-year-old Winchester man who became known as the “apologetic robber” when he was arrested in August in connection with nine robberies faces a host of new charges in connection with five more robberies over a four-day stretch earlier this month.

Police say the latest one-man crime wave started Oct. 9 when a man walked into a bank branch in the 400 block of Bank Street.

That was followed by a pharmacy holdup Oct. 11, in the same area of Bank Street, two “fast-food establishment” robberies, one on Oct. 11 in the 1500 block of Woodroffe Avenue, the next on Oct. 12 in the 600 block of Bronson Avenue. Finally, the same suspect is alleged to have committed a robbery at the bus terminal on Catherine Street on Oct. 13.

At each robbery, the suspect indicated that he had a gun, although none was ever seen.

In the first four robberies the suspect was given an undisclosed amount of cash. In the last, he fled empty-handed.

Police say John Thillman was spotted by a patrol officer on Arlington Avenue Wednesday and arrested.

On Aug. 11, police said they had arrested and charged Thillman in a similar series of robberies. During the robberies, police noted that victims said the perpetrator was “openly apologetic” about his actions.

Thillman was to appear in court Thursday.
