Frightening texts and emails from a purported “hitman” are being sent to citizens as part of a revived scam, the Renfrew detachment of the Ottawa Provincial Police warned in a release Wednesday.

In the messages, the “hitman” says that he or she has been hired to kill the receiver, and that they will spare their life if paid several thousand dollars.

Police advise the public to ignore any messages they receive from the long-running scam. Any reply, even if no money is sent, also confirms the perpetrator has reached an active phone number or email address.

The police recommend that anyone receiving these messages should contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre by phone at 1-888-495-8501 or online at www.antifraudcentre.ca.
